Question about Sony KP-53HS10 TV

1 Answer

My Sony KP-53HS10 was working perfectly fine last night. This morning we turned the TV on and it has a red, blue, and green, 3d effect. Could this be a loose color convergence chip? If so how do I fix it?

You do need a convergence board reworked. In some cases you may repair this at home. Generally the ICs you are looking for will have a 392 **** number. You will have to replace these. And any resistors you see standing tall on the board next to these ICs should be checked and replaced as necessary. The resistors will be about one watt and under 10 ohms. Checkout the website www.TvRepairKits.com and see if they have something to work with. Thanks for asking and give me a few hands please!

What does the convergence board look like? And where is it located?

I have not repaired this model, but I must tell you this. You will be looking for two large identical heatsinks. They will be north and south of each other, on one side of the board. The ICs will be attached to the heatsinks with a clip on each. They will have aprroximately 13 or fifteen pins each attatched to the board. You may see a IC# 392****, on each of the two ICs which are black! This will be the board you will want to pull out and rework. Thanks for asking!

Projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both. Repair kits with instructions are also avail from www.TvRepairKits.com

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

BOTH OF THE STK-392-560 convergence chips need to be replaced; there are also fuses on the power board that protect them--do not look like fuses; if you need photos of the place where the chips are and the fuses, let me know.

Repair takes about a hour and parts if purchased on EBAY will be under 25 dollars.

There are no fan in this tv.This tv most common problems are the dead convergence board parts have problems, picture have colors lines R,B,G out of alignment, have colors shadows, and 3D pictures. The convergence board must have it 2 STK convergence ICS and some or all it resistors to be replaced to solved convergence problems. The problems u discribing,it a starting point, just the convergence problems, have not take it effect yet.Sooner or later ur tv will have the convergence problems.

The problem might be the Convergence circuit went bad, generally there are 2 chips (part# starts with STK392 - something) that will need to be replaced, it involves de-soldering and soldering some tried doing themselves and made it worst. A local TV shop may charge from $300 to $475 depends on the labor service call and parts.

Good luck

KP-53HS10 Real HD

On this TV there is only one input for any HD resolution. Input # 5 is the component input i.e. red/green/blue cable. Just get the correct cable and match colors from cable box to TV this will allow the TV to display 1080i resolution ( only one this TV supports ). FYI you will also have to connect the red and white cables to the appropriate inputs to get any sound because red/green/blue connectors are just for video display not sound. Once your connected you'll be able to access video # 5 be sure to set your cable box to 1080i resolution also. I hope this helps later J.
