Hi.

To start disconnect USB data cable from computer. Turn off computer and disconnect computer power cable. Also remove battery if the computer is a laptop.

Restart the computer and before connecting the camcorder, download and install Sony drivers here:Sony eSupport - DCR-HC20 - Software Updates & Drivers.

Connect the camcorder only after installing or if asked by software setup wizard.

Regards.

Ginko.

It sounds you may need the correct driver in your computer to have this Sony Digital camera to accept the downloads.
Go to this website and choose the correct information needed to retrieve your FREE driver

How to download software -picture package version 1.0 of Sony Handycam DCR-HC20 Mini DV Digital Camcorder

Unfortunately, the original software is not available for download. However, you can use i.LINK interface and use the Windows Movie Maker available in the Windows to transfer videos from the Camcorder.

My computer, Windows XP, does not recognize the USB and this is the only cable i have. i want to burn a disc off the tape.

The earlier Sony Handycam models require a special USB driver. Go here http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-download.pl?mdl=DCRTRV22&upd_id=1452&os_id=7 and click on the download link. Install the driver, plug in the camera via the usb cable and it should work.

No one has given me a correct answer. I'm trying to get a video off my Sony Handycam and download it to my compuer. I have windows 7.

WINDOWS 7

  • Drivers:
    • The drivers needed to connect your Sony camcorder to a computer and transfer files are already included in the operating system.
  • Not Supported:
    • The USB streaming feature is not supported with the Windows 7 operating system.
    • The Windows 7 Starter edition is not supported.
    1. Connect a Firewire cable to the DV port on the camcorder.
    2. Connect the other end of the i.LINK (firewire) cable to the computer. NOTE: The computer i.LINK ports and capture cards may have either 4-pin or 6-pin connections. Sony digital camcorders use i.LINK ports with 4 pins. If your computer only has a 6-pin i.LINK port, then it will be necessary to use a 4-pin to 6-pin i.LINK cable.
    3. Turn on the digital camcorder by moving the POWER switch to the VTR position.
    4. Cue the camcorder tape to the beginning of the video footage.
    5. Turn on the computer. Your computer should recognize the camcorder and automatically install the driver it needs.
    6. Start the video capture software on the computer.
    7. Begin playing the recorded video in the camcorder.
    8. Begin importing the video with the capture software. It should now be possible to copy the video using the video capture software if the computer hardware and software are configured correctly.
    Hope this helps you. www.austintelstarservices.com

Sony Handycam DCR-HC42 Mini DV not recognized by Windows 7

win vista and win 7doesn't support usb streaming. the usb driver for this model would not be compatible with your computer's OS. although, you were able to download PMB still this wouldn't work, it's basically an alternative software that you can use with the newer OS. still the device driver would not be installed. and you would get a message that "ilink connection is not detected". the reason you get that is bec the camcorder and the software is intended for use with the dv (ilink or ieee1394) connection. so if your computer has an ieee1394 card and you have a compatible ilink cable, then your good to go,it should be a plug-and-play connection (no drivers required). all you need then would be a video capturing software (like win moviemaker) to transfer videos from tape to PC. hope this helps. thanks :)

if you have windows xp. just download driver here:

and use windows movie maker to capture videos. also turn on the usb stream of your camcorder on the setup menu.

    Computer not recognizing camera

This was so easy to solve it was almost embarrassing that I didn't get it. If you have the Picture Package Software (Possible to download SPVD-012v) When the camera is plugged into computer through the USB cable and turned on Play/edit mode you will notice a small button that says "FN" this is a function button. Click on Menu and scroll down to the printer looking icon. Press "EXEC" and then highlihgt "USB STREAM" and turn it on. Then boom! You are done. Stupid sony!
