Was dropped. Now will do everything EXCEPT take photos. Lens, display, flash, etc. etc. all work fine. Just no screen image or photo when in "shoot" mode.

Sounds like the CCD or a stuck shutter blade. Try this place: www.CamerasAndParts.com They only service Canons and they are the only place we recommend for the Canons. It's all they work on and they are about half the price of most shops, plus the work is just excellent through them.

Hi there please follow the steps and let me know the result.
1. Ensure batteries are fully charged & clean the battery connector point in side the battery compartment.
2. Look carefully between the lens and the camera body for any sand, dirt or any damaged etc.
3. Try turning the camera with the lens facing down and shake to dislodge anything stuck
4. Try removing batteries and memory card, wait 5 minutes and refit the battery only.
5. Now turn on camera( with out card ) and see ,if working then fix the memory card & again turn on the camera. If working then fine . Otherwise format the memory card and fix back in camera again & try. Make sure before format the memory card take a back up all photos in your computer then format. If no luck then reset or restore the camera setting by pressing Menu key for 2 sec .. in not done the press both Menu & self time key for 2 - 4 sec.
i hope it will gives you success.

My lens won´t retract. can see photos in Play mode, but will not switch to Record mode

Did it fall?
Try using a compressed air to blow off the small particles of dust which are arround the mechanism of the lenses(you dont have to dissaseble, just blow arround the lenses)
After that try playing with the batery(in-out while pressing the power button,so that the mechanislm of the lenses could come into place)
Hope it helps!

Viewfinder and LED display both black.

Try pressing the power ON and when the lens has retracted, remove the batteries. Wait a few minutes. Press the power ON again. Now replace the batteries and try the camera again.

Camera lens wont open or close after being dropped. it won't turn on and take pictures

Lens error is usually caused by mechanical faults concerning lens assembly. The lens cannot extend or retract fully, the error is detected and lens error is returned.
Sometimes this can be fixed playing with the lens during extraction or retraction to help the lens asset getting back to normal.
More often the camera lens must be disassembled and re-assembled by a technician to fix the problem.

Lens wont retract

The problem you are describing is a problem with a sensor in the lens assembly of the camera. It seems to have failed and needs to be replaced. Following are the instructions to send your camera to Olympus for service. http://olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/cpg_servicerepair.asp Olympus will charge a flat rate repair fee for this product if beyond the one year factory warranty or the warranty is voided. The cost is $87.85 plus your local sales tax. This covers parts and labor, factory cleaning and diagnostic check, 6 month warranty and the cost of shipping the product back to you is all included in that price.

System Error

I had the same problem. It was because the lens had just begun to retract and then jammed. I tried pushing back it in to no avail. I was considering it was time for a new camara anyway. Hoping to get a little more life out of it, with nothing to lose I was about to take it apart to see if I could clean out any obstruction as other posts had reccommended. Before I did that, I let my Mr. Goodwrench cousin take a look at it. Instead of trying to force the lens back in, he pulled it out. Apparently the slight play in the lens allowed him to do so and whatever was jamming the lens from retracting must have fallen out. Suddenly, the lens retracted and the camara is working fine. So before you throw the camara away or take it apart, try pulling out on the lens housing. You may also have to move it slightly back and forth while pulling out to get whatever is jamming the lens to move out and away releasing the lens to retract again.

Lens does not retract in play back mode

Never buy a Canon camera again. I have the same problem, and sorry that nobody has a solution. This is the worst of the 3 Canon digitals I have purchased. Lack of a view finder makes it impossible to preview shot when outside on a bright day.

No pictures when in autofocus mode

I was having the same problem with my D40... but I read your post, tried switching the 18-55 lens to manual, then back to auto, and it seems to be working fine now. Hmmmm... think maybe there's a circuitry issue with the lens?
