Instructions mislaid, how to run D-NE510?

Walkman played disks for 1.5 books without problem, then screen stated batteries were running down, so I put new non-rechargeable ones in while charging those I had been using. Now player shows 'W"s, then beginning numbers (001 etc), then the screen is empty and nothing happens.. When I push play/pause, screen shows HOLD, then clears again. Help!
