Question about Computers & Internet

Open Question

I have a TOSHIBA MK5055GSX ATA Device (hard drive) which i have used as the internal drive of my dell latitude d630 . currently it has given me a notification or rellocated sector count (bad sector). I can see the lable of that partition. The problem is actually with just a partition. When i am viewing the disk with partition magic, i am able to see the used space as well as space left etc but cant explore it. if i try it tells me the volume does not contain a recognised file. Also says to is either make sure all required file system drivers are either loaded or volume is not corrupt. I dont want to format what should i do now please.

When a hard disk has bad sectors, the magnetic layer is worn out and the number of bad sectors will increase. If you keep using this hard disk you risk losing your data. This hard drive cannot be repaired, throw it away and get a new one.

As long as the connection interface isn't different, the Rpm does not matter.

Here's a walk through on how to install the drive.

The Bios should automatically recognize the new drive. You can go ahead and install the operating system from a bootable cd or usb.

I need a diagnostic tool for RAID falure code 0. Initial boot indicates degraded condition. DISK scan does not seem to remedy the issue. Did the drive actuually fail? Is there a fix? Primary disk still...

It looks like you have two arrays here. The first one being a mirrored RAID array and has only one disk. This means that the other disk has failed in some sort. This does not mean that the drive is bad, just the RAID failed for some reason. You will need to rebuild the RAID if you want to maintain the same level of redundancy.

You can just attempt a rebuild the RAID to the same drives but if this fails you will want to replace the bad drive. In order to do this you will need to make sure you can tell which drive is which. You do not want to mirror the bad drive to the good one.

If attempting a rebuild to the existing drive does not work or is not an option (because the failed drive could really be bad), you will need to determine which physical drive needs to be replaced. You may be able to hot-swap the drive but if you can power things down, that is always safest. Once the new drive is installed, you can rebuild to it and all should be well after that.

Replacement hdd for a Toshiba MK4026GAX (ATA)

Any brand-new ATA hard-drive (you probably won't find any new hard-drive smaller than 80GB) will be compatible. Pay a few extra dollars for a 7200 RPM drive (rather than 4200 or 5400 RPM).

Sounds like your hard drive is toast but £145 for sony to replace it sounds expensive, you should just be able to replace it with any 2.5" internal sata drive
here is an example of one
http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/9663375/Toshiba-MK5055GSX-500GB-2-5-Internal-SATA-Hard-Drive/Product.html?source=5066&engine=froogle_pc&keyword=Toshiba+MK5055GSX+500GB+2.5%22+Internal+SATA+Hard+Drive+(Sony+Playstation+PS3+Compatible)

That one is about £80 but im sure you can find cheaper, the best news is that replacing the drive doen't void your warranty which is good, here is a link to really good guide for replacing your ps3 hard drive

good luck, let me know how you get on
