Have you tried fitting a bypass wire to seat switch and retest then try disconnecting it completely and retest

if that does not work check that the blade engage switch is not stuck down.

check that catcher switch is not open if this nodel uses a catcher ?

have a look ?

What causes my 13.5 hp craftsman model #917270412 engine to die when i release the clutch

My question would be what caused the belt to break. Have you checked under the mower deck to make sure the blades turn freely? Could be that something is jamming them and causing the motor to die. Or even a blade that hit something hard might be bent against the top of mower deck.

I have a craftsmen. Went out to mow and the battery was dead. Recharged it and then when i went to let off brake/ clutch it started to die. This also happened when trying to engage the blade. I check...

Just to help you with your troubleshooting:
You can get off the seat with the engine running if the blades are not engaged and the brake is on.
I also think that you can start the mower without being in the seat, but I'm not sure about that.
First, see if you can jump the seat switch.
Second, I think the discharged battery is a different issue.

If you replaced the belt then you know there is a tensioner/guide pulley and another pulley which goes in and out with the clutch pedal movement to take slack out of the belt. I would closely examine both of those as well as the linkage and return spring on the clutch pedal.

Get your model # from under the seat (should start with 917) and go to this site.. Then, enter your model #, click on search, scroll down to Subcomponent list to Mower Deck and there ya are. You'll probably have to click on 'zoom in' in the top left corner. Hope that's what you were looking for
