Question about Crosley 0187SST Turntable

Crosley cr249 Worked on setting up my new Crosley cr249 tonight and can't seem to decipher why most of what I record is distorted on playback.  All the levels look right going in while recording, and it sounds fine then...... but about 75% of what's recorded is distorted when I play it back.   Any ideas?

I've tried listing on another device with no results.  Wondering if I need to reinstall the software, or if the cartridge or needle is bad, or....... the turntable has been sitting on my desk for a month or more, and I haven't been able to use it.  Help?

The recording head? In the computer? ? Everything else I use the computer for, including i-Tunes works fine...... the turntable plays LPs fine..... the problem is that after I record what sounds fine on the turntable, its distorted on playback on the computer, usually after the first 1 or 2 cuts on the LP recorded...... everything else is distorted. I don't think its the turntable or the needle, I don't think its the computer..... seems like the software? Still looking for help on this.

Hi

Sounds alot like a buildup of dust under the stylus. This would make it distorted after running for a couple of tracks.

A couple of questions...

Are you giving your LP's a wipe with an antistatic cloth before playing them.
Are you monitoring the audio whilst you are recording.

robotek

This may explain things for you. It's a bit lengthy but worth the read.

It's got to be something in the conversion process. You could try a different recording software program such as the FREE one listed in my previous post.

    Here's a link

Make sure the needle on the turntable is straight and not twisted to one side or the other.

Are you using a standard microphone jack? like a 1/8" if so this is most likely the problem. also what program are you using. i recommend audacity.

make sure the needle is clean. its most likely something to do with the sound interface it self. I do 2 shows a week on turntables. and recently had to move to a new computer where i had to use 1/8"/3.5mm plug into the soundcard. I then upgraded to a audigy xifi with front drive bay for the rca inputs. is there a reciever inbetween the turntable and the computer?

can the turntable play at all? can you get it to work with a regular receiver and through speakers? cause if your hooking it straight in to the computer it may not have the preamp needed to receive the signal. As a computer has a line in. which is why you need a mixer or receiver with preamp ability. Usually listed as phono on your receiver.

cause the signal from a turntable is phono and has a very weak signal. which is why a preamp powers the line in a receiver to the speakers or a line out.

I replaced my needle on my Crosley CR249. Now, there is a lot of static. Any idea what to check next!

The diamond tip on the needle is most probably been damaged. Check the tip for any significant visual issues with a magnifying glass.

Sounds like you need a new platter. Has the platter worked OK before or has it always been like this?
I suspect you might have to contact Crosley to see who supplies parts.

Tone arm keeps returning to rest on Crosley CR249

Hi, Try this. with it turned off. Lift tone arm across a record to the run out groove and set it down. Now power up and hopefully it will reset itself. In all honesty I would sell it and get a decent old school player. John. Styluscity.com

I just bought a replacement needle for a Crosley CR66 4 in 1 record player and now my records sound distorted and far away

It might be that you have caused an earth wire to the cartridge to come off or loose. Check the connections to the cartridge.

Need driver for windows to have the Crosley CR249 turntable work correctly.

Hi,
Insert the enclosed software cd into your computer.
Follow the instructions on the computer screen to install the software. If the software does not load automatically, browse the cd and open the Read Me folder for further instructions.
Connect the small end of the USB to the USB jack on the back of the unit.
Connect the other end to a USB port on your computer.
On your computer open the Record Recording software.
For instructions on operating the Record Recording software, browse the software cd and open the Read Me folder.

I got that from the manual. You don't need a separate USB driver for it, mate, but you DEFINITELY need the cd...

Hoping you have the cd,

Chris (ziraffa)
