Question about HP Computers & Internet

1 Answer

My HP Pavilion laptop has fans that make a lot of noise. I was wondering if there was an option on my laptop to change to settings/ lower the amount of time fanning. If not, are there things I could do, like delete software or keep my laptop on a different surface to solve the problem. Thanks, Osman

The fan works on battery but not on power

Sounds like your power management settings have been played around with. See if you can reset them.

Go to Control Panel
Click Power Options
You'll now see you have one selected like "High Performance" or "Balanced".
Click on "change plan settings" next to the one that is selected
click on "Restore default settings for this plan"

Before messing around with fan speed, I would clean the computer. Use compressed air to blow out the vent slots in the underside. Many times, fans must work harder if there is a lot of dust there in order to keep your computer cool. I just had to do this for a client yesterday. A clean computer will run quieter.

Fan noise after a few minutes running.

Fans are typically a little noisey. If it's exceptionally loud or continues for a long time it may indicate the fan is no providing the proper cooling. Purchase a laptop cooling pad to place under the laptop while your useing it and make sure nothing is interfering with the airflow around the unit.

I think the fan is making a super loud grinding noise.

I would not recommend this. You could fry your cpu and then you would have no notebook. If you are going to open the notebook make sure there is nothing interfering with the fan. The fan can be replace. Take the fan out and try to replace it, if needed. Do not run the notebook without a fan.

The laptop heats itself a lot

The inside of the laptop may have a lot of dust in it and may need to be cleaned. It might also be worth while to get a laptop cooler. Something like this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/aerotus/98138764/

Cpu fan noise problem

It appears that the 1GB RAM that you installed is generating more heat due to the density of the chips they require more power. This is what is causing the fan to work harder. To verify this you can re-install the original memory and see if the fan noise reduces due to lower heat.

Hard drive or fan click?

Very unlikely that you are hearing any fan turn off and on since these are temperature controlled varable speed devices, not serviced by a relay that you can hear.
Some hard drives are audible even when working normally so that is not necessarily a sign of a dying drive.

Check your system settings to see if the drive is set to park and turn off too often.
I keep mine set at 30 minutes so it isn't cycling more than needed or running all the time.
