You can buuy spools already wound with string or restring the spool you have. When you look at the head you should see two orange buttons, press them and lift the cover off the spool sits inside. Replace with a new one or restrung one running the end out the hole. Replace cover and you are ready to go.

My B & D GH400 type 3 trimmer just stopped running, could it be a bad on off switch .

Allot of times the cord fails where it goes into the Trimmer handle just from flexing all the time. I have taken the handle apart, cut out the bad section of cord and rewired the switch.
You need to have some experience with wiring and a healthy respect for electricity to do this. If you do it wrong you could kill yourself or someone else. Use extreme caution or have a shop repair it for you

Yes, I have a Craftsman 25 cc Gas Trimmer and we just snapped the starter cord. Do you have to open up the head to fix this? Does it need a special type of cord?

Yes you have to remove the plastic recoil assembly and install a certain size cord. We use a #3 or 3.5 cord on all our string trimmers, blowers with that size engine.

Trimmer Question

mains, battery or petrol A hedge trimmer can be powered in 3 ways: mains electricity, rechargeable battery or petrol. They all have their advantages and disadvantages, so decide which is best for you. Electrical hedge trimmers provide a clean lighter weight option with the convenience of immediate and continual use. However you may be restricted by cord length - not ideal if the hedge is a long way from your power source and having a cord can be obtrusive and dangerous. Rechargeable hedge trimmers give you the best of both worlds. They're clean to use and have no cord so they can be used anywhere, without the danger of accidentally cutting the cord. They are less powerful than petrol models and you do need to plan ahead though and make sure your batteries have been charged. 5-7 hours of charging will give you just 30 minutes use. A second battery will give you back up but if you're cutting for long periods of time, you may find this timescale too restrictive. Petrol hedge trimmers can again be used anywhere, there's no cord so they're safer. Just top them up with petrol and away you go, no charging necessary. These models do tend to be harder to use - they're heavier, noisier and smoky.
