Question about Video Game Consoles & Games

1 Answer

After I get my PS3 ylod fixed, is there any way to prevent the console from having the problem return? Is having the PS3 standing vertically instead of sitting it down better for airflow or is buying some PS3 external fans going to better my situation. Need help please! If noting could be done for a permenant fix I will have to get a Slim. Note: I own a 60gb PS3 Thank You.

Hi, dynamo27

Yes you can prevent ylod by maintaining your ps3 so that it wont overheat but it will eventually come back in 3 -4 months time period . Standing vertically also helps the air to circulate inside the console to help prolong the life of the console. Its much better for you to get a slim as it is energy efficient and will eventually save you enough money in the long run.

Thanks,
Banaple

When i put ma ps3 on it goes green yellow red

Hi,
I experienced the same issume before. This is called Yellow Light of Death or (YLOD)
Please see below on some information regarding this issue and some possible reslotion to prevent this from happening:
If we go by Sony's definition then having PS3 YLOD means "general hardware failure". So it means that a fault could have occurred anywhere in your Console. Don't be afraid though, since most of the times PS3 YLOD is due to motherboard getting detached.
Tips on how to fix it:

Alternatively you can try to repair ps3 YLOD yourself. There are a couple of things you can try to fix YLOD - check for any loose connections since some connections might be loose, you can also try switching it off for around 30 mins and switch it on again. This will help in cooling your PS3 down.

If these tricks don't work, then I will suggest you go through a dedicated PS3 repair guide instead of tinkering on your own. Such guide will cost you almost nothing in comparison to what Sony charges. And, god forbid, if it happens again you can solve the problem for free.

One of the greatest thing about doing it yourself is that you don't have to pay hefty charges to the big companies. Also, you don't have to wait for weeks, you'll completely fix ps3 ylod in no more than a few hours. Many people have already successfully fixed yellow light of death and I don't see a reason why you won't be able to do it. If my PS3 has yellow light of death then I won't pay Sony to repair my PS3. I'd rather fix PS3 lights myself.

If all this steps wont work i suggest to call SONY

Yellow light wont do anything

This video explains the Yellow Light of Death:

Basically, you have 4 options:
  1. Buy a new PS3.
  2. Return your YLoD-ed PS3 to Sony for replacement.
  3. Send it to a third-party repair shop.
  4. Fix it yourself.

When I turn on the playstation it goes almost immediately to stand by mode. When I slide my finger over the stand by button it tries to run and then returns to stand by mode.

Playstation 3 turns green then yellow then red

The problem is known as a YLOD on the PS3 or Yellow Light of Death. Your PS3 is most probably a 60gb model as they are mostly known for this issue. The PS3 is fitted with a very good cooling system. Unfortunately some of the 60gb models still overheats (either the GPU or CPU). This causes the YLOD and is very similar to the XBox' s Red Ring of Death.

The best is to return the PS3 if still under guarantee. You can attempt to repair it yourself at own risk. There are no statistics on how long the fix lasts. Most of the YLOD consoles I repaired myself are still holding out and it seems the fix is more permanent than the Xbox 360 fix. Here is a link to the guide that must be followed and it works (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_Ic1_TY-GU) The other parts in the series you will find on the same page. There are 7 parts

After the fix a couple of things can be done to prevent future overheating:
Do not keep the PS3 in a confined space.
Keep it away from dust.
To enhance airflow, remove the cover over the HDD when switching it on.
Switch it off when not playing.
