It's there to help you set the binoculars quickly to your own inter-pupillary distance. Just make a note of the number the pointer on the scale is at when you find a comfortable setting for your eyes and then when you next use them just set the pointer back to the same number. The scale is the angle of the yoke, and you'll often (but not always) find that the scale works on other makes and models as well to help you quickly set the binoculars up to your own preferences. The left eyepiece will also have a dioptre scale (not always accurate) so when you have sharp right eye focus, adjust the left eyepiece until you get sharp left eye focus as well.The scale on the eyepiece indicates how many dioptres (+/-) your left eye is different to your right eye. If you know the left eye setting and the yoke angle, you can quickly adjust most binos to your own comfort settings. Fixed focus binoculars are different in that they have dioptre adjustment on both eyepieces, so left eye settings from regular binos are not directly useful on fixed focus binos, but the yoke angle may still apply.

How do you calibrate and Abney Hand Level? The one I have is a CST/Berger 17-645.


You need a carpenters level longer than the Abney level. Find a smooth flat level surface like a table with the carpenters level. Double check the carpenters level by turning it 180 degrees and see if it still shows level. If it doesn't get another carpenters level. Set the Abney level at zero and lay it on the carpenters level or the flat table. The bubble should center on the index line. There is usually two screws that allow you to move the glass tube (and the index at the same time) to center the bubble and index if it is off. Then check your findings. Put a piece of contrasting tape on a wall at eye level. Walk back 20 or 30 feet and see what the angle reading on the Abney level shows. If you keep your feet in the same position; that is your eye at the same level, you should read zero.

My 18x50 IS binoculars are broken; the right eye piece won't focus and I hear a clunk inside when I turn it over; the left focuses just fine. What can I do and where; here in las vegas?


Sounds like you've dislodged one of the prisms inside. A service center can look it over for you, but from personal experience, it's cheaper to replace them than pay to ship them to/from the service folks plus the estimation fee just to find out that they'll have to be replaced, anyway. Sorry.

Datamax prints ten or so labels then skips one (leaves it blank) then continues on


First check the sensor is free of any label debris. Then follow instructions below:


Standard Calibration is appropriate for most media types. During the process, the printhead assembly can be raised for visual access to the media and media sensor. In addition, displayed sensor readings can be used to indicate the best position over the media, which is helpful when using small, position-critical TOF notches or marks.

Three readings are required:

Water got in the scope how can i get the water out and is the scope still good


Your scope may not be hurt if water has not caused any rust yet. Things you will need, hair drier, Vaseline, large clear plastic bag, gas from a paint ball gun canister. Remove the eye piece, and shake as much water out as you can. Use the hair drier and heat the tube up, not too hot but warm, to dry the inside as good as you can, keep after it, shaking it and heating it. Once you feel all the water and moister are gone. Put a good amount of vaseline on the threads of the eye piece. The put the scope, the eye piece in the plastic bag. Use the paint ball gas and inflate the plastic bag, tie off the bag leaving room so you can screw the eye piece back on the main tube. Leave the scope in the bag for a few minutes before you do screw the eye piece on letting the gas fully get in the tube. The gas will give a bit of positive pressure inside the tube, Will displace any other air that will have moister in it. Keep the inside from fogging back up. The vaseline will help seal the gas inside. Hope this Helps Fix Ya up.

I have a nikon d 40 and was wondering if the display screen can be used to preview the shot instead of using the eye piece .


The Nikon D40 is not equipped with the Live View feature which allows the user to use the camera's LCD to preview the shot. You can only use the viewfinder eye piece.

My left eyepiece on my Zhumell 20X80 will not turn to allow me to focus it. The right one works just fine. I don't want to force the left eye piece. Is there a locking mechanism I'm not aware of? Is this...


Typically the left eye piece is not adjustable. You focus the left eye with the center adjustment and then focus the right eye with the eye piece adjuster. I hope this helps.

Problem with alignment of Meade LX90 8" telescope


Start from scratch-

RESET the hand controller.

Calibrate motors using the same power source you will use outside.

Re-train the drives

Calibrate sensors on Polaris

Use either the 110 volt power cord, or buy a 12 volt power pack and the proper Meade 12 volt cable. (www.scopestuff.com carries the right 12 volt cable)

If your scope is NOT the LNT or GPS model you must level the tripod before you align. Go to home depot and buy the $3 small plastic two way bubble level, or the bulls-eye style bubble level.

Further trouble, I suggest going to the LX90 Yahoo group forum, and asking questions there.

I've made every possible alignment on my 10 inch Meade LX200GPS telescope, training,set-up, calibration, etc...but when I slew to a star....it is ALWAYS very far off in Dec....though RA seems to be well...

I am not familiar with the LX200, but there are probably folks on the Yahoo group that can help.  The only thing I can think of is if you are using a wedge and the wedge isn't at the correct angle (should match your lattitude).  Or you are not using a wedge and the Meade controller thinks that you are.  But one would think the calibration would solve that.

Bundled Eye Piece Cover


The Eye Piece Cover is the cover that attaches to the viewfinder. The eye piece cover prevents light from entering the viewfinder when shooting with your eye away from the viewfinder.
