Question about Microwave Ovens

1 Answer

I have an old Sharp microwave. The light comes on, and the fan runs, but no heat. As it is over 20 years old, I suspect the magnetron. Any comments?

Hi.

If the microwave is working but not heating, then the magnetron is not necessariy the faulty part.
Before replacing the magnetron there is need to test the high voltage capacitor, the rectifier diode and the wiring. If all this are fine, then the control board muast also be checked. If turntable is not running check also the door switch.

The diode and capacitors can be tested using a tool with diode tester and cap meter. The capacitor must be allowed discharge before testing, or you risk to get electrocuted. Even if power is off a big electrolytic capacitor like the one on the MW can release a big discharge.Capacitors can get discharged by shorting their two contacts.
Before replacing the magnetron test also the control board.
Replace the magnetron if the checks and all of the high voltage component tests are good, but the unit still does not heat.

All locations, and description of this parts can be located using the general diagram here: Counter top.

You can also find parts and specific diagrams for most models using the link below:

Where do I find parts and diagrams?

Remember that microwaves are potentially dangerous devices if not repaired properly, the job must be done by a competent person.
A microwave energy leakage test must always be performed after the oven is serviced or repaired.

Regards.

Ginko.

My dcs mo-24-Ss microwave oven cannot heat the food after turn on, everything working fine other than no microwave come out

Assuming the turntable, inside light, and internal cooling fan all work when you press "Start" to cook, then I would suspect a bad magnetron, or a bad connection at the "FA" terminal of the magnetron.

If one or more of those three items do not work when you hit "Start", the I would suspect a bad door switch or mount.

The DCS MO24SS is essentially a rebranded Sharp R-530E-series microwave with different cosmetics and a higher price.

The service manual for the Sharp model is here.

The internal Sharp parts in the manual will interchange, but not the external cosmetic parts.

You can order Sharp parts from Encompass here.

Sharp r-610dk microwave runs but don't heat up

The magnetron has failed, or the inverter board, "if 7 years old or less" there is also a possibility the keypad control board may be the problem.

Buzzing sound... Turntable stopped. food heats up but uneven. No microwave fan when heating.. no light inside expensive fix?? Unit is 10 years old

If the microwave oven is 10 years old then it is time to consider a new unit, by your description it is going into cascade failure where different parts have stopped working, the buzzing sound is the magnetron warning you, it is about to fail. The fans job is to keep the magnetron cool while it is running.

Microwave run but dont heat

The running sound is only the fan. The heat comes from a magnetron which is the primary part of every microwave, Sounds like the magnetron is dead. If it's a newer unit (1 to 3 years old) it should be covered under a warranty. Contact the manufacturer for repair or replacement.

Timer counts down, light turns on, no fan, no heat.

Hi bboelter,

When you say "no heat", I take that to mean it's not heating the food up. When a microwave suddenly stops heating food, but still appears to run (the control electronics and light are usually a separate circuit), it's usually a defective/dead magnetron. Given the age of the oven (13+years), this is also points toward the magnetron. The fan _may_ or may not be on the same circuit as the magnetron, that's hard to say without a wiring diagram or schematic.

Prices for replacement/repair will vary, you will need to find out what that service costs in your area before having enough information to decide on repair or replacement. If you tell the repairer that you suspect the magnetron, they should be able to quote you a fairly accurate estimate.

When my first microwave lost it's magnetron (~20 yrs ago), it was 5 years old at the time, and the cost of buying a new oven was only a little more than the repair - but I had the repair done anyhow. Since then, we've replaced the entire oven instead (twice). Newer ones may have more power/less energy wastage, etc.

If I can be of further assistance, or if you have questions about any of my response(s), please let me know before rating me.

If this solves the issue, please rate it accordingly. My goal is to earn a "FixYa" rating from everyone I help.

Dacor dcm24s.light, fan, and control panel work but turntable and heat do not

Most likely the bottom door switch. Dacor units are built by Sharp and that switch is a very common problem. You'd either need to check the switch with an ohm meter or remove the cover of the switch to see if it's burned inside.

I have a microwave drawer that is about 6 months old. The fan and light and timer work but the drawer will not heat. Model # KB-6025ms. Is there any thing I can try to solve the problem?

The first thing I would suggest is a hard reset. Unplug the unit for a minute or so. Then plug it back in, set the clock and try again.

But if the oven light is getting power when you try to cook, but the oven won't heat, the next question is this: Does it sound louder or quieter than normal?

If quieter, I would suspect a relay or connection on the control panel.

If louder, I would suspect a shorted high voltage diode or a bad magnetron.

Since it's less than one year old, it should be fully covered under warranty. I'd suggest contacting the manufacturer to get it fixed free.

You can contact Sharp at 1-800-BE-SHARP (1-800-237-4277) or visit them online to arrange service.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

Maytag microwave mmv1153aaw

my guess would be the wave cover. sometimes they smoke and makes sparking sounds. does it still heat food?...if it does, then its not the magnetron.
