Question about Maytag Neptune MDG5500AW Gas Dryer

3 Answers

My gas dryer MDG5500AWQ runs, fires and heats for about 60 second and then the flame goes out and will not come back on unless you let the unit set briefly and then restart. I have changed the two coils on the gas valve as well as the glowing ignitor bar. The dryer behaves exactly the same after these changes. I'm suspecting a thermostat type of issue as it seems to quit when the dryer heats up and then can be restarted after the dryer cools down. (it does not try to refire if the dryer is left running cold.)

Are these accessed from the front or the rear?

  • w2wkb Sep 02, 2010

There is a third component wired in next to the cycling thermostat and the thermal fuse (on the blower housing.) What would that be?

  • w2wkb Sep 22, 2010

At this point I have replaced both gas valve coils, the hi-limit and cycling thermostat and the ignitor and after all that the dryer is doing exactly the same: running about 60 second and cutting off.

I opened the exhaust venting from the front and see no sign of accumulated lint.

You have replaced both gas valve coils? How about the thermostat? Make sure all venting is clear as well. Also take the vent hose completely off the dryer and see if this does the same thing. Your hi-limit thermostat may be defective if the problem persists.

It's either of the cycling thermostat on the blower housing or the high-limit thermostat on the burner assembly is malfunctioning. Disconnect power to the dryer prior to servicing to avoid the risk of electric shock.

Open the dryer door and remove the four screws located vertically along the inside lip of the door opening. These screws hold the front panel to the front shroud assembly.

Once the four screws are removed, grasp and press in on the upper edges of the front panel posts then twist it inward to release the clips holding it to the cabinet. Tilt the top of the front panel and move it away from the dryer.

Bypass the cycling thermostat on the blower housing by disconnecting the wires and taping them together or connecting a jumper wire between them. Close the My gas dryer MDG5500AWQ runs, fires and heats for - 5994623.jpgplug and start the dryer.

Does the motor stops when the flame goes out? What is the serial number of the dryer?

Remove the exhaust vents throughout and clean thoroughly. Any lint build up will put the heat in the check mode after the first minute running. The moister sensor detects that. These have been installed on all dryers the pat 20 years to prevent home fires

disconnect the exhaust vent tube and fire this dryer up again. I'll bet it will work this way
If so replace the exhaust tubing or clean the old one out
A moister sensor detects any lint build up and puts the heat into the check mode

Hello Jerry,

It is working like its supposed to when the flame goes off, the way all dryers work is the flame(heat element on electric heated dryers) comes on and when the drum exhaust temp reachs a maximum of 155degrees and the flame goes off, the air temp will cool off to 120degrees and the flame comes back on and cuts off once again the 155 degrees has been reached..much more that 155 degrees the clothing is very likely to combust and catch on fire.

Please reply and let me know if your having a dryability issue with your dryer or where you just concerned since the flame went off??

No heat, ignitor goes on burner goes on sometimes and after short time goes out. ignitor goes back on, but no burner. what up

If the flame sensor is not returning a good signal, the gas valve is shut off as a safety measure. I surmise that in this situation, the igniter is programmed to fire for a time to flare off any accumulated gas from the initial attempt to fire up the burner.

Check for the following: adequate combustion air supply (make sure inlet vents are clear), proper exhaust venting, flame sensor properly positioned and not cracked or otherwise broken, burner holes are clean and not caked over with combustion deposits (if the flame is uneven and weak right where the flame sensor is located, it will be treated as a failed ignition).

In the worst case, the gas valve is defective and unable to detect the flame signal. It's also possible that a thermostat is sending an overheat signal, but that doesn't account for the igniter sparking a second time after the burner shuts off.

Either the venting needs cleaned or the coils on the gas valve are bad. Unhook the venting from the back of the unit and run. If works ok then clean venting. If you still have the problem, replace the two coils on top of the gas valve.

Gas neptune dryer fires up for 45 sec. to 1 min, then goes out

Could be a couple different things,Possibly a thermostat or high limit that is kicking out too soon, also has a flame sensor next to the burner that can come and go.if you have a toggle switch or pushbutton switch you can unplug the unit take the two wires off the flame sensor (black box about the size of a cigarette pack on the left of the burner)plug them into the switch start the dryer Turn the switch on till the igniter glows bright, turn the switch off and the burner will light if it stays lit at least till it gets to temp replace the flame sensor.(It won't cycle with out flipping the switch each time)

make sure that your vent is not plug up can you go outside your house and feel good air coming out the vent when the dryer is turn on if so the only other things it could be is the coils that sit on the ignotor assmebly or the high limit termistat is not working properly the coils are little black circle coils that sit in the ignitor assmly should have a metal braket across the top of them holding them in you can check resistance on these coils if you have an meter
