Question about Dell Inspiron 531s Desktop Computer

1 Answer

My Dell 531S will not boot past the BIOS (Dell logo) screen. At first I thought it was the hard drive, since it wasn't recognizing anything connected to SATA port 1. Since then I have purchased a new hard drive and acquired a corporate version on Windows XP (my computer had Vista before, but the recovery partition is inaccessible) but the DVDROM drive isn't accessing the disk. I followed the steps on Dell's troubleshooting page and disconnected my RAM and hard drive, reseating everything carefully and trying again, but no results. Another problem I noticed is the BIOS setup screen inststs on reading a 1.44 floppy drive (I don't have one) and the computer won't give the option to go to setup with the floppy drive disabled. Any thoughts?

The SATA ports are working. On the thought that either a port or cable were not working, I switched ports for the hard drive

It seems like you have multiple problems:

1. DVD-ROM drive not accessing the disk

2. unable to "disable" the "floppy" drive in BIOS SETUP

3. not recognizing anything connected to SATA1 port

It's time to take your computer to a qualified technician, for professional trouble-shooting.

Is your DELL computer still under warranty? If so, exercise the warranty.

Or, maybe you should just remove the "new" disk-drive, the RAM, the DVD-drive, and then responsibly "recycle" the old computer, and purchase a brand-new system, repurposing the disk/RAM/DVD components.

Wont go past logo screen, disconnected from power then back on. turned off then on, still logo screen, now says 'preparing automatic repair' nothing happened and its been at least half an hour

Try booting into your bios...
Google how to boot to bios (Manufacturer / Model number)
e,g How do I boot to bios on Dell Precision T3500
Try a hard drive test from there. Sounds like a hard drive error.
'preparing automatic repair' should end and give you options to troubleshoot if it isn't getting that far test hard drive.

I replaced my HD on Dell inspiron 9300 and it won't recognize the new drive. The new drive was also purchased from Dell and was one that was compatible with the computer. It's saying there's no bootable HD...

It probably has found your new HD, you need watch the screen as you attempt to boot. Failing that enter the bios (usually " hit DEL to enter setup" appears on the screen. Don't change anything but just check to see if the bios has detected a hard drive.

Now .......... the reason why it won't boot is because you have to re-install windows onto the hard drive.

Dell Inspiron 600 - trying to reload, but not

You might need to go into the computer's BIOS and see if it's set to boot from a bootable CD or USB device. If it's set to only boot from the hard drive, it won't even look at other drives. Different computers use different ways to access the BIOS: you might try pressing the F12 key when the boot logo appears. Check your owner's documentation - it should tell you the procedure for your computer.

Dell 700m wont boot with new hdd

Hi

Need to know how far it boots, eg past cmos screen, ??Win screen

Also some laptops will only accept hard drives up to certain sizes. Check in the Bios as to whether that size drive is actually supported.

If you are given the option to go into the setup (F2) try to disable the floppy disk drive or move the hard drive up in the boot order.
