Question about Belkin Computers & Internet

1 Answer

Can't Connect my Belkin router FSD7230-4 to the internet. I can connect to my new ADSL service when my computer is directly connected to the modem. When I'm going through the router it's not establishing an internet connection. Accessed the 192.168.2.1 site and after changing the connection type to PPPoE and entering my ADSL user name and password the Internet Connection Status changed from Not connected to Connected, but it's still not connecting. My computer uses Vista. The Vista Network and Sharing Center guesses that there may be a DNS issue. I received suggested Primary and Secondary DNS paths, to be used if the modem needed configuring, in the documentation for the ADSL connection. I tried entering these into the Primary and Secondary DNS in the router's settings but was not successful in getting internet through the router. Can someone please suggest how I can get the internet working through the router?

There are several reasons that this could be happening. Sometimes the DSL modem can be the cause. If it is configured incorrectly then it will not be setup to work in a routed bridge mode (what you need for it to work with the router). Easy fix for this: press the "reset" button in the back or bottom to set the modem to default settings then power cycle everything. Second, on your computer go to network and sharing center and find your adapter settings. right click on your Ethernet or wireless adapter (whichever you use to connect) and go to properties. Go to the TCP/IP protocal properties and check that everything is set to obtain its data automatically. Last thing to double check: Call your ISP and just verify the ip, login info, and DNS info are all correct. I have had an ISP give me the wrong DNS info before on accident and after several hours of troublshooting I called back and a different guy answered and told me that my DNS was wrong. I changed one number and POOF! Fixed! You can find more help for this at www.attivia.com or email us at support@attivia.com.

You are a bit confused with the various components required for Internet connections.
If you have a dial-up connection with an Internet Service Provider, all you do is connect your computer's modem port to the phone line and dial the phone number of your Internet Service provider.
If you are connected to the Internet Servise Provider by ADSL and have a combined ADSL router and modem then you connect the phone line to this router/modem. If the ADSL modem is separate component then the phone line is connected to the ADSL modem and this modem is connected to the router with a LAN cable and the computer is connected to the router with another LAN cable. If the route is wireless and the computer has a wireless card then you don't need a LAN cable between the router and the computer.
If you are connected to the Internet by ADSL, to secure your Internet connection and configure your computer so it can connect to the Internet, please follow my instruction - click on this link :-

If the Internet light is off then there is a problem with the phone line to the ADSL modem or the modem is faulty or there is a problem at the telephome exchange.
Disconnect the phone cable at the ADSL modem and connect a phone handset to this cable - check for a dial tone and that you can dial out.
If you don't get a dial tone, use a different or new phone cable.
If the phone line is OK then : -
Ring your ISP to get them to test your connection to your ADSL
modem.

Of the Belkin Modem Routers I have used and supported, around 60-70% had connectivity issues.

If the Belkin was cabled there appeared to be less issues than if it was used in a Wireless and cabled capacity.

I suggested to another person only moments ago to quickly sketch a diagram to show, how the network is set up. Add labels to the piccy's which provide the following info:

1. Computer Types (Makes, Models) and OS (Vista, Windows7, Leopard etc...)
2. Connection Types (Wireless / Cabeled).
3. The IP Nos.
4. Modem Types (Make, Model). ie, Belkin F5D7234-4 Router.
5. ADSL or ADSL2.

If it is possible to upload the diagram to FixYa then I suggest you scan the diagram (sketch) or take a photo of it and put it on the computer so it can be uploaded to FixYa.

I only discovered FixYa yesterday and joined, so I am not sure what is possible yet, as I have been focussed on trying to find solutions or provide suggestions on where to find the solution.

I would be proactive and submit your problem directly to Belkin via their website, I have provided the Australian Belkin website link below:

I hope this is helpful to you, please rate it. Regards,

2. Belkin router F5D8633 ADSL router works only with ADSL broadband connection and does not support Cable broadband connection.
3. Do not use the Setup CD Assistant; reset the unit and configure it manually. Make sure to set the correct VPI/VCI values in the process as the default settings may not be correct.

5. Please follow the instructions given below to configure the router manually:
- Connect the phone line direct to the router, or through the filter.
- Connect the computer to one of the LAN ports on the router.
- Switch off the router and power it back after 5 seconds.
- Restore the router to factory defaults by holding down the reset button on the back of the router.
- The power light will flash and then come back ON solid, indicating that the router is being restored to factory defaults.

no, but you need to configure the router to connect to the internet, you should have a "quick start guide" that will help you connect to your router and set your ADSL dial settings (as it needs this to connect you to your internet service)

once these connection settings are set you should be able to connect to the internet

you can then explore the other settings including the wireless configuration of your router

Belkin Wireless Router won't connect to ADSL

Turn off your modem and your router. Turn your modem back on wait for 2 mins then turn on your router. Try to connect. If that does not work. Connect your computer to the ADSL directly and check if you can get on. if not call your ISP.
