Question about Canon CanoScan 8400F Flatbed Scanner

2 Answers

Problem with CanoScan 8400F that does not power on Verified that 12V supply was not working and replaced with a new working one. However, the unit still did not power up. I verified with a voltmeter that the new supply is putting out 12 V. Measuring the resistance at the DC power in connection to the scanner with the power switch on, there was an open resistance. Is there an internal fuse in the scanner? If so, how do I access it? If not, aside from the external power switch itself, what other point could likely be open? Is any information available on how non-destructively to open the scanner and troubleshoot this problem? Is it possible to get hold of a service manual?

The new power supply was of the correct polarity and current rating. It makes sense that a damaged Zener could be the problem. Of course it could be something else. A schematic would allow for clear troubleshooting. In a similar vein, I need to know how to open the scanner non-destructively. All these issues would be totally addressed if there were a service manual. Is there one that can be found, even if it's not for this exact model? The only "support" Canon offered me after a query describing the symptoms was to send it back for "warranty replacement." The warranty is a miserably short 90 days from purchase--way past here.

The general comments offered so far are fine and sensible--also known to me. I guess my real complaint is with Canon (and other scanner venders?), for evidently refusing to supply information needed for clear troubleshooting. I guess they expect you to throw away a scanner with a simple problem and buy another of theirs! Is there ANY more specific information out there on ANY scanner? Probably in terms of DC regulation and other standard issues, it might be helpful. My real hope is that someone has gotten hold of a CanoScan 8400F service manual!

Should be nearly total fix! Good manual download site. I didn't find it using Google.

If power supply is new, check the power inverter/conveter to make sure it is transfering the 12 volts to the usual voltage which is around 5 volts to each capacitor and resistor.
Check for any swollen capacitors or burn marks on the system board. Many of these do have an internal fuse that is located next to the power supply where it attaches to the main circuit board.

In fact since the adaptor was faulty , when you replaced I hope the power supply used is of the same rating. Hope there was no mix up of the polarity of the DC pin to the scanner.
Now the input can show up a resistance and open up but if you reverse the probes a reading can come up. This is because there is a diode/regulator combination at the input end as a protector. So if the earlier adaptor had failed in high voltage it could have shorted the protection zener diode.
But to have a first hand infomation it is important to open the scanner to look inside.
You can open the rear and get access to checck out the board for inline fusible resistor that would hve opened out or a regulator. If only you dont tamper but to havea good look and check only itmes you understand.
If with warrant take help from the link below or even without warranty you can clarify more.

You can get full suport from Canon , call for clarification:

Sorry the manuals are not available but if you look carefully the board can be accesssed.

look for scres or else it can be just locked panels. if no screws are found use a flat screwdriver to jump the locks....not sure of this model.

I had the same problem about a year ago. The solution was to replace the power cord AND don't leave it connected to the powers source when the scanner is not in use, or it will burn out again.

CanoScan 8400F

Try this:

Open the CanoScan Toolbox.
Click the Save option.
Put a check in the box that states "Display the Scanner Driver".
Click Scan.
Click the Advanced Mode tab.
Make sure Select Source is set to "Platen".
Click the Preview button at the top left.
If the error still occurs, then most likely it will be a service issue.

One thing to check...see if the inside lamp illuminates when you turn the scanner on using the power button at the back left side of the scanner.
