I personally wouldn't try to do that, you run the risk of rendering the scanner nonfunctional, and also probably would void the warranty if it's still applicable. You may try calling Lexmark support at 1-800-332-4120 and tell them the scan bar is really noisy, and that's making the scans blurry. Depending on whether you're still under warranty and who you get (no joke), you may get a free replacement, since this sounds like a manufacturing defect.

If you can't get it replaced because it's out of warranty and decide to buy new, Lexmark's new business products that have just been released have a 5 year warranty, which is probably best in class. Check them out here.

Sorry I didn't respond to your post sooner, you've probably fixed this by now - I only registered here recently.

Printer keeps making an adjusting noise

If it is the scanner making the adjustment noise it is because it is having problems adjusting scanner either for location or white balancing. You can try one thing that sometimes fixes the problem, but if this does not work then you will likely need to replace.

1. Turn off printer and unplug power.

2. Lift up scanner lid so that you can see the scanning glass

3. Locate the screw on the top left side next to the small **** of glass. This glass is the section used for scanning from the automatic document feeder. Remove that screw and then the plastic that it was holding. Lift the glass out.

4. With the glass removed you can see the drive belt for the scanner. You need to rotate it until the scanner head moves to the left far enough that you can see the top of the moving part of the scanner. You will see a thin light bulb and a slot. Do not touch the lightbulb, it is fragile. You may need to pull on the assembly to move it the last bit to access the slot

5. Use a flashlight to see down into the slot, you will see a thin mirror that runs the width of the slot. If that mirror is dirty, that may be the problem and it needs to be cleaned.

6. Use a q-tip moistened with either alcohol or window cleaner to gently clean the mirror. Make sure you do not leave any lint in there.

7. Replace the glass and turn printer back on. If this is going to work it should come to ready.

Sharp al 1000, the scanner is on and goes right and left all time

The simple fix is to clean the reference strip under the glass. There is a white strip under the left edge of the glass that the scanner reflects off of in order to set up the scanner bulb intensity. When this strip gets dirty the the machine just keeps trying. I would remove the cover on the left side glass area with the 4 screws. On the bottom side you will see the white strip. Clean this with glass cleaner. While your in there I would go ahead and remove the large glass. Turn off the main power and pull out the scanner bar and clean 3 mirrors. One is the "slot" in the main scanner bar and then the 2 in the assembly to the left that trails the main scanner bar. Once cleaned put it all back together and this scanner bar "referencing" issue wil go away. If it does not (which is rare) then there is a problem with the scanner/ccd unit and the machine is really not worth repairing at this point.
Good Luck and Thank You for using Fixya.

Continues to show lock error when started . have locked and unlocked under all possible conditions.

If this is a mirror lock error you may need to lubricate the stainless steel bat that the scanner rises on. Unplug copier!!! remove top 4 screws and take off glass carefully. put a very small amount of oil on a rag and wipe down the ss rod. Slide the scanner assembly back and forward a few times (carefully) hold only where ir rides around the bar. hope it works. good luck

"L1" flashing is common.

1.Under the bottom left corner of the control panel there is a plastic latch that locks scanner assembly for transportation purposes (you can see it if you look underneath; you unlocked that latch when you installed the copier). After a while, due to vibration, that latch moves and deters scanner/lamp free movement. Move it counterclockwise (looking from top). This we usually troubleshoot over the phone.

2. If this doesn't solve the problem, the technician should clean and oil the shaft the scanner assembly rides on (steel bar that runs on the rear side of the copier, left to right, you can see it through the glass).

Hp 2820 scanner error 5

I'm not sure if this will help or if this is the same as i had but I had been given A laserjet 2820 which keep't coing up scanner error 5 the chap that had it before me contacted hp service & was told to replace scanner unit which he did & it was ok for a while like 6 months & started then started again.
The problem he had was powered up ok till it came to scanner bulb warming up the scanner unit moves back & forth then try's to escape through the right hand side of case.
This is because it cant see the home position white strip under the scanner glass all you have to do is remove top section of the scanner unit complete with scanner glass & clean the under part of the scanner glass the white strip is located under the wide gray panel as you look down on the scanner glass with the lid up. hope this is of some use. my unit has been working for some time now

Vibration and Scanner Error Message

Have you cleaned and lubricated the scanner rail and the pad where it slides across.
Sometimes those rails become dry and get dirty.
Also if you can, reseat all the connectors to the scanner. That would require taking the covers off the machine, You may have a bad connection on one of the scanner cables.
Lastly the motor itself may be bad. But drag or a bad connection seems more likely to be the problem.

Toshiba e studio 150

on the toshiba Estudio 150 there is a lock for the scanner unit underneath the left side of the scanning unit where you would put your hand to get a copy. what happens most of the time is someone unintensionally turns that know which in turn gives the error code because the scanner cannot move. check to make sure that the lock is in the unlocked position. this plastic lock can be removed with a screw driver. other times we have found that the scanner rail underneath the glass needed to be lubercated with a light oil. to do this the four top screws on the top corners of the machine would need to be removed and the glass will lift off. once the glass is off you will see a silver bar that runs across the scanner unit that the scanner rides on. take some light oil like typerater oil put on finger and coat the siver rail with it by running you finger of oil on it. put back together and try. if that doesnt solve it the only other thing i have seen is broken scanner lamps and in that case it needs to be repaired by a service tech.

Scanner Error - Scanner Bar will not scroll across glass no scan or copies

I couldn't find anything specific to the 3210 online. Long shot, but this link is very detailed about another (very different) HP model that may just give you some ideas. Usually on this type of hp unit, once you have the front two screws out the top cover wil just hinge towards the rear. Could you post back some close up photos, hopefully we can give you some more help :)
