Question about Coleman 10' X 10' Sundome Tent 9160K101

1 Answer

I have had two small Coleman 'Frontier PZ' propane lanterns for a number of years with no problems. Last year one of them started shutting down for no apparent reason - it would light normally, burn for 4 - 5 minutes and then go out. This summer the second lantern has started doing the same thing. Changing gas cylinders seems to have no effect, nor does a new mantle fix the problem. It's hard to be certain but as I can't hear any gas hissing it's as if the jet gets blocked after a few minutes alight. Turn off the gas, leave the lantern alone for a while and it will relight ok, though it will still only burn for a few minutes before going out again. Any ideas?

There is something in the jets or the piping to the mantels, you my find spider webing there, if you did no cap the port where the tank goes some small friends might have wanted to go camping with you.

SOURCE: i want to know how i light and use my Coleman

fill the tank about 2/3 full. put the cap on tight, pump the air pump about 50 to 75 times to pressurize the fuel tank, you may have to turn the pump knob in a few turns to get a good pressure feel when you are pumping, then push the pump down all the way and turn the knob in until it gets snug. then you turn the gas knob on until you hear a hissing noise. turn it off and stick a large lit match in thru one of the holes in the steel plate below the lens and hold it close to one of the mantles then turn the gas on again and it should light up. let it run for a minute or so until the mantles light up brightly and then turn it on the rest of the way. I've done this hundreds of times. hope this helps and good luck. Jeepfxr

SOURCE: how to light coleman lantern

Kerosene lanterns require a little more than just lighting the mantles. Go to Coleman's website and find the directions (for free) for KEROSENE lanterns. The generator on the lantern needs to be preheated with alcohol before it will actually light. Make sure lantern is a Kerosene lantern and not a white gas (Coleman fuel) type, there is a difference even though they look similar.

SOURCE: I have a Coleman 228F

The other poster is right if it was left with fuel in it the fuel pickup is probably plugged. On this lantern the pickup is called a "Fuel Air Tube".
To test if its really plugged pull the generator (thats the brass tube with a nut on the bottom that runs up between the mantles and open the valve (do this outside, we expect fuel to come out). Fuel should POUR, or maybe even shoot out at that point. If it doesn't you've definitely got plug down below. If you do: drain the fuel out, put in some carb cleaner or fuel system cleaner, pump it back up and open the valve to let some of the fuel system cleaner into the FA tube, then close the valve and wait a few days. Open the valve again and see if you're getting more.
If you don't have a blockage you might have something in the air tube (thats the larger tube behind the generator) or the burner tubes (the things the mantles tie to). Or maybe you're expecting something other than what really happens, when lighting the generator will kind of gurgle or sputter to indicate theres fuel present. You don't want liquid fuel coming out of the generator's gas tip, that would give you a big fireball when you tried to light the lantern...

SOURCE: I have a coleman propane

Clean the hole in the tip of the generator, or turn the wire handle 360 deg. 2 or three times, and try to light the lantern with the wire handle in the down position.
I hope I was some help? Cheers David dwfarrell@gruvy.com

William, went to Coleman site, looks like you remove screws on bottom of lantern to access and change battery.
Check the attached links to your manual,

How do I retrieve the bolt that attaches the main part of the lantern and has fallen inside?

Not sure where it could have fallen into but if you unscrew the top nut you can take off the lens and keep working down taking parts off until you get it all apart. Hope that helps.

Should I use an electrical or propane lantern for camping?

I suggest propane or gas because they are cheap to operate and you are given the option of dimming, which is something you can't do with most electric lanterns.

My northstar lantern lites then goes out within 20 to30 seconds. Is it the generator? and if so what # generator do I need? The lantern is about 8 years old and used once or twice a year.

If the problem is that it loses pressure quickly (that is, you have to pump it up again and then it will light briefly), the problem is most likely the cap. It has a rubber gasket underneath that has probably dried out and isn't giving you a good seal. These caps are common replacement items, all the same size, available at Walmart, Kmart, etc. Another likely culprit is old fuel. Many years ago (like 30) the fuel lasted nearly forever. But sometime since then, the fuel has been reformulated making it work better in the short term, but having a limited shelf-life. If your fuel is more than a year or two old, try some new fuel.

Have a Evcon Coleman Furnace shows three green blinking lights but will not ignight what could be wrong

I have had the same problem with mine for the last 2 years. Remove the motor on the side of the furnace(usually held on by 3 screws) and turn the fan blades inside by hand. after sitting all summer it seems to get stuck. If it moves freely, replace the motor and try to start it again. This fixed mine the last 2 years! Hope this helped.

My lantern/fan/radio doesn't work when its not plugged in?

The battery probably isn't taking a charge anymore because it needs to be replaced. These batteries will sometimes last a few years but then a replacement is needed and they will likely run like new. You can check out http://www.batteryinternational.com/lantern-battery.html to find a replacement battery, or you can call 1-877-28-BATTERY if you are having difficulting finding the battery you need.

How to fit a mantel to a coleman propane lantern

Hi, First remove the knurl nut on the top. Remove the top and then the glass globe. There are several types of mantels most of which tie with a string that is part of the mantel top. The newer ones have a wire clip in place of the string. Which ever type you had on before you need to remove the old pieces completely. Since the mantles burn to an ash they will disintegrate when touched but if it had the metal clip you need to remove it. Tie or clip the new mantle over the lip on the output orifice being careful with the screen underneath. Replace the glass globe and top, put the nut back on finger tight. Remember that the mantel turns into ash when it burns for the first time so keep the gas low to start it till the mantle forms properly ( in the first minute) Good Luck, this should Fixya!
