Question about HP Photosmart 945 Digital Camera

1 Answer

HP 945 lens stuck out, red light on steady, white screen

I was taking pictures with the camera when it locked up. The lens is out, and wouldn't retract. I couldn't get the camera to respond, so I took the batteries out. When I put them back in, the LCD screen turns white, the red light is on steady, and nothing happens. Power button has no effect. Have let the camera sit with no batteries FOR DAYS! Have tried 3 sets of new batteries with no change in response.

Nope, no noise. I've also tried gently "encouraging" the lens to retract, but it doesn't budge.

Same problem Leaving out batteries does nothing

  • mrrogers Jun 27, 2008

At first the lens stayed stuck in the out position, the screen flashed white and the red light would blink. Removing the batteries for both short and long time did not change problem. Now about a week later, the camera is still stuck and even with fully charged batteries it will not turn on.

Not exactly the same but very close When I install new batteries the red light comes on and goes off very shortly the lcd screen comes on and goes off very shortly (about 1 sec.) it made a sound at one time, but the few more times I have tried, there are no sounds.

I've had this HP Camera for years. It really takes (took) great pictures until I dropped it on the lens. The lens looks a little crooked :( . It tries to turn on and i can hear the lens try to retract but nothing happens. Is there a wiring diagram online that i can look at? I ordered an old used camera which still retracts...any suggestions on how to take apart correctly and does this type of camera cause a shock even if it doesn't have the batteries it it? I would appreciate anyones help. Thank you

Ok, here's a couple of long shots to try...
If there is a backup battery remove that also and let it sit for some time with the power switch in the on position (if it has one)
also check the battery contacts are clean. Refit both batteries and try again.

Beyond that unfortunately it sounds like a main board failure. If you have any warranty on the camera return it, if not its likely the cost of replacement would be fairly high but worth checking with HP.
If your handy and fancy a go at it yourself it may be worth opening it to check nothing has become dislodged, but this is unlikely. else pick up a faulty one off ebay, one with a broken LCD or lens and have a bash at swapping the main board out yourself.

Before opening a digital camera its recommended you let it sit for some time (like a week) with no batteries in. There ia a large capacitor (like a battery) which can be charged up to 300v if you touch the contacts or anything connected to it it really is like a shock from the mains.. I have been bitten many times...
This can damage the delicate parts within because of high voltages but more often because you almost always drop the darn thing..
Best of luck

Tried to take pictures of lightening last night and couldn't. My lens kept going in and out and wouldn't focus so wouldn't allow me to shoot. Then I kept getting a BUSY across the screen. ...

For this kind of pictures, Don't try to focus on a lightning, it is to quick and mabe the overall brightness is not enough for your camera to focus.
So you can try to focus on something at infinity, if you manage then, put your focus on manual before re focusing, this way you will be able to take as many pictures as you want.

You can also try to focus manually directly.

And for you information the best way to take a lightning picture is to put your camera in bulb mode, use a remote control, open the shutter and close it as soon as you'v seen a lightning.

Hope this helps.
and good shooting !

On my sony A200 camara .. I have a grinding noise when turning camara on and off from lens and sometimes when last bit of auto focus pictures are still good

it sounds like you have some sort of dirt or sand in the lens mechanism. this also could be a symptom if the camera was recently dropped.

if you can, try getting some condensed air and spray what you can in the cracks. if you aren't comfortable doing that, you can take it to a camera shop and have it cleaned.

the same thing happened to my camera and eventually, the lens wouldn't come retract, thus rendering the camera useless.

hope that helps.

Stops taking pictures

I have the similar problem, I turn on the camera and after the lens comes out , red light blink all this time, and suddenly it powers down without retracting the lens back in.
The battery are fully charged AA 2400mah / 2650mah Duracell at 4.0 ma with load test. I was wondering if there is any circuitry problem.? Any experts in digital camera electronics please respond? Trick: To bring back the lens back in for safekeeping i trik this, i turn it on while it is reading the memory etc and after a sec or two i turn the knob to off, this way lens goes back inside.
I have read other brands also have their cameras lens sticking out and never going back inside.

Lens is stuck open - will not close. still takes pictures

you must have dropped your camera where it caused damage in internal part. when cameras are dropped wires and screws inside loosen which will cause trouble. Have it checked by a pro. you might destroy it more if you try to fix it yourself. Thanks.

Kodak easy share z612 will not turn on to take a picture

When the battery dies, usually the camera will retract the lens if possible. If the battery is so dead the lens can not retract, I would recommend trying to charge or change the battery. Or try to turn the camera on, and then manually shutting it off if you can.
