Hi.

If you are using FireWire, try starting up the System Profiler and check if camera is listed on FireWire connected devices.
Also do a test using AV cables. Remember to click on the camera to select it, IMovie does not always select camera automatically, if you have connected a different device before you may need to click on the camera icon or use the slide switch to change to the Sony camcorder. Instead of using "import from camera" from drop down menu click on the camera icon.

If there is an earlier version of iMovie, or a different program that may access firewire(eg.VMWare, Windows emulator and more), then the video from firewire will not be displayed.

Many camcorder are not working in iMovie 09. Downgrade to 08 version if you are using 09.

My canon xl1s eats tapes in vcr mode while in rewind. this has happened with two different tapes, sony dvc tapes.

Tape mechanism problems can be quite complicated. This will require disassembling the camera to repair the tape mechanism and can be done fairly inexpensively. However, it's not a user serviceable problem and will need to be repaired by a qualified service technician.

My name is Rick and I'm a professional repair technician with over 20 years in the business and have repaired many of these. I'm semi retired and work from home with little overhead so I can keep repair costs low. If you decide to have the camera repaired, please click HERE for a directory listing that suits your needs.

Connect the camera to the Mac with the firewire cable.
Open iMovie and capture the required footage.
Send the iMovie project to iDVD and burn a disc.

VHS to Canon MV450i transfer or direct to Mac

The MV450i has an AV input. So get a lead to go from the AV out from the VCR to the AV input at the front RHS of the lens (3 pin stereo jack socket behind grey cover - the lead was supplied with the camera). Go to the buttons behind the screen - press the line in button - camera goes to pause. Se the VCR playing - press the play / focus button to start recording to the tape.. Import to imovie as you normally do.

I had the exact same problem; my tape icon was flashing red with a line through it and the recorder would not record, no matter how hard I begged it to. After a full day of frustration, I called the videographer who had used it previously. There is a little trick.

1. Open the exterior tape door with the "Eject" button.
2. Wait, dont touch the tape. The little metal encasement will pop over and open within a few seconds.
3. To properly put the tape in, insert tape, push the little metal door that sais "Push this first".
4. Then push the exterior door closed.

Voila! Thats all there is to it!
