Question about Siemens Freezers

1 Answer

Hi I have an upright Siemens freezer (model E000786) which is 9 years old. It still works well but I have found for the last couple of years that it needs defrosting more frequently due to the ice building up. I'm in the process of defrosting just now and a friend had suggested that I should let it defrost for a longer time to allow the internal pipes to defrost and 'drain away'. Is this worth doing and if so, how long should I leave it after there is no visible ice. Also how would I 'drain it' Look forward to hearing from you (soon please?) Thanks Linda

A full defrost will take, depending on room temperature, about 12 hours,DO NOT USE HOT WATER/SHARP OBLECTS.
you can use car deicer but it will leave a residue/smell that you can remove by wiping out with clorine bleach.make sure any drain holes are syringed out with clorine and wipe out any drip tray to stop smells.by drain away he probably means"dries naturally"
do make sure all food is wrapped/covered (clingfilm) to cut down on frost/condensation inside the unit.after a full defrost fill with your usual foodstuff and fill any space left with newspaper filled poly bags.(less airspace=more efficient)

I have had the same problem with my frigidaire/electrolux upright freezer... I am researching to see if there is a pattern. Once or twice a year for the past few years, the freezer defrosted itself. I found the outside of the unit to be VERY hot to the touch around the time that this occurred.
We typically unplug it for a chunk of time when this happens and then replug it. It has always begun working again.
Sadly, we have lost many groceries and have had to clean many bloody meat messes as a result of this. ANYONE buying this freezer should save their receipt... That way, they can return it or have it repaired when it fails. I hate to think of sending all of these failing monstrosities to the landfill... =(

Freezer not freezing

Is it running? You might need to put your ear up to machine, to hear it, They run very quitely.
If not running, could be a bad cold control (thermostat), or defective relay and overload mounted on the compressor body.
If the compressor is running but no cooling, then you're in serious trouble unless,
The unit is 5 years old or newer. In that case you have factory warranty on what is called the sealed system. Contact the dealer in that case for service. Service should be free.

Freezer Problem

If it started to cool again the compressor was running. Check the condenser and make sure it is clean. Provide as much air movement through the garage as possible . 100 degrees is a high temperature to be operating a refrigerator in.
