SOURCE: Pool heater temperature is higher then the actual

With these particular pool heaters, troubleshooting without specifics is very difficult to do. The users manual actually has a flow chart that walks you through, step by step, questions that you will need to answer to determine the problem. That is going to be your best shot at finding a solution. Here is a link to a pdf version of the users manual.

Obviously one (or both) is/are wrong. The easiest way to figure out which is to use a thermometer to take the water temperature to determine to actual temperature. Then you can decide whether or not to spend money to repair indicators or thermostats.

Where is the thermostat in relation to the return? Is there air flow or is the air stagnant in the area of the thermostat. Have you placed a thermometer in varios locations where the thermostat is located? Try these locations and see if the thermostat needs to be placed in a location better able to reflect room temperature. Also how long have you lived in the house? If it is a newer home I suggest that you contact the builder or the air conditioner/heater installer to see if they have a schematic of the placement of the thermostats.

Thermostat reset trips continually

Here's an article detailing electric water heater repair, that will be helpful to you.

Generally, when the reset button must be activated repeatedly, it indicates that one of the thermostats is not working properly. It is failing to sense the the actual temperature of the water in the tank.

This may be caused by a number of different things with the more likely being a defective thermostat, water damaged thermostat, poor contact of the thermostat with the tank itself (this can be due to rust build up between the two or insufficient spring pressure holding the thermostat against the tank).

You should do a visual inspection of the thermostats (with the power off!) to rule out the poor spring pressure, presence of rust or water and water damage to the thermostat. Repair sources of leaks if possible, remove thermostat(s) to clean the mating surfaces behind it and replace thermostats / parts that are weak or bent (in the case of the spring clip); wet or show evidence of earlier water damage.

Once the thermostat(s) can properly detect the rising temperature of the water being heated by the heating element again, it will shut off power to the heating element when the water matches the temperature you have selected. When the thermostat is unable to accurately determine the water temperature due to poor contact with the tank, the thermostat will continue too allow power to flow to the heating element - causing the water temperature to rise significantly higher than the level selected. This is when the high temperature switch operates to prevent the water from being heated any more. Needless to say, scalding is a very real threat any time the heaters continue to heat the water to a temperature higher than 140 degrees.

I hope this helps & good luck!

We have a hayward H100IDP1 pool heater,,we can hear fan come on,,but does not ignite...Was working fine beginning of season,,,notwont ignite..Pool filter is fine andrunning well,,could it be a pilot ...

Make sure the pipes are full of water. Check the thermostat to see if it is calling for heat. Make sure the thermostat is set to a temperature higher than the current temp of the water. If all those things are Ok then the unit may have gone off on high limit the last time you used it or the gas valve coils may have to be replaced. If there is a reset button for high limit press it. If not then the safety sensor for high limit may have to be replaced. If the unit fires up but does not stay on then the gas valve coils may need to be replaced.
