Possible fault can be in the CRT base of the TV or the fault of the Chroma IC/ Crt Drive connecctor.
The CRT board is the picture tube rear conneccted to a printed circuit board. Normally there are many transistor drivers , three for the three seperrate guns and two for the purity correction.
There could be a fault if one of the transistors are off with a dry soldering as you are having an intermittent fault. So the best way out is to solder this board and check.
If the fault is staying then check the line going to the main board- the rribbon wire cluster. You will notice a large IC near to this wire connecction with a lot of passive ccomponents around it. Solder the IC and if you find a Crystal around this section solder the area around it. Put the sett on- But take presaution when set is on not to touch circuits- and tap gently on the board. If there is colour flicking look for dry solder joints and solder.Repeat this work with caution not to bridge any tracks.
Finally we can also suspect the picture tube. If a gentle tap is bringing the colour back it can be the tube, you can use a regenerative apparatus to remove short and maybe get the tube in good order.
But that will be the last thing as I suspect the fault can be the CRT base board.
Please check and comment.

The "Drive" circuitry has failed.
Generally NOT an expensive repair.
Take it to a reputable repair shop and get a "Quote" for repair.

Tv went to black and white

It may be a wire has come loose. Check your video inputs. Especially if you have animals or small children. On certain video inputs you lose color if one wire comes loose.

My componet/av only shows black and white on my vizio vp422

The 37" Vizio I just bought has a very confusing feature where the same input can be used as either the Y channel of the component or the full video channel for composite. If you plug a component source into the TV and then select the composite input ("AV" on the remote), you will see a black and white version of the full component signal (makes sense as the Y channel is just the luminance component). As sad as it is, I was stumped by this for a while until I happened to hit "COMP" and got full color. FWIW, the manual warns about this, but it really doesn't emphasize the point. I wonder how many returns they get because of this.

17 yr. old 35" RCA loses color intermittently. Picture & sound ok

Three guns Red Blue and Green in the picture tube of an old CRT set. If one of the guns goes out it effects that color. Sounds like one of the guns inside of the tube is going out, To costly to replace for such an old antilog set that will have to have a convertor box next month anyway.

TV picture is not good

from what your describing it sounds like a resolution or ratio setting on your t.v. you can change these setting on your cable box and t.v as well this seems to be the setting on your t.v. since you have already unhooked the cable box. if changing the settings doesnt resolve your issue you may have some failed components on the pc board that could be repaired by a repairman v/s purchasing a new one. hope this was helpful....
