SOURCE: GE microwave error - PROBE
Chances are the keypad (membrane switch) is shorting, or the control panel as an assembly may need repair.
If you or someone you know decide to work on it, we have *critical* safety, disassembly, and troubleshooting info at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk
You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here: http://tinyurl.com/gv383
There should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel, which is very helpful when troubleshooting. It shows you how to test the keypad.
Also, we repair these for $39.95 (in most cases) for customers nationwide via mail. If yours needs a keypad, we could also give you the estimated total repair cost if you contact us with your exact model number.

In order, I would suspect:
- it needs a reset
- door switch or door switch mount trouble
- your keypad is failing
The first thing I would suggest is a hard reset. Unplug the unit for a minute or so. Then plug it back in, set the clock and try again.
If that doesn't work, leave it unplugged for maybe an hour.
Then let us know if the hard reset does not fix it so I can give you some advice on the other two probable causes.

This seems like a problem with with the door latch circuitry HW. If the unit is still in warranty, call GE customer care. If not, your neighbor will need to buy a new oven. Service on microwave ovens is not cost effective because the replacements are so reasonable and have so many new features.
I have a lot of experience with these units. If the door latch circuitry is in question you may be exposed to dangerous microwave energy. Hope this helps...

Repaired the unresponsive keypad on my older Kenmore (model 721.68100): Unplug. Remove integral cover for top and sides which is held in place by 5 metal screws. The cover then slides toward the rear. Unplug two connectors to back of keypad and clean them (I used contact spray cleaner). Some of the components retain a charge even when unplugged.
