I am having the same problem mentioned by the others about a black screen and not being able to take any pictures. I have a 256 card in it. You can see the camera settings but no picture. I did not see anyone come up with a solution yet. Help! Please!
Thank you for the Cannon Customer Service contact info..
The Cannon C.S. Rep. was very friendly and helpful. I will be sending my Cannon A75 to the authorized service center in IL.. Hopefully, Cannon will repair my camera @ no charge (probably a bad CCD Sensor) and return it to me quickly????

Re: Canon Power Shot S21s screen is black
Hey birdstrike, According to the manufacturer there are two options. You can try pressing the display (DISP.) button, and if that doesn't work you are probably going to have to get it serviced by an authorized service center. There is a know problem with the CCD sensor on this camera and other model cameras that causes a malfunction when the camera is exposed to heat or humidity. Canon is covering this repair, and I have included a link below to the instructions on what to do. http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=PgComSmModDisplayAct&fcategoryid=225&modelid=13390&keycode=2112&id=29819 Sincerely, Allan Go Ahead. Your new 4GB memory card is the problem. The card would likely be an SDHC card (look on its front cover). Your A540 camera was designed well before the SDHC format came out, and your camera will not recognize it. Your camera can only use standard SD cards (2GB or less). Here's some from Amazon.

This is a common problem in older Canon S2 IS cameras, especially ones that have not been regularly used. What happens is that the lens iris gets stuck at a small aperture. Most often you can get function back. Here's how:
Turn the camera on in shooting mode.
Turn the mode selector to shutter priority ("Tv").
Use the four-way button on the back to set the shutter speed to 15 seconds. That's right, 15 seconds.
Press the shutter release. Count to seven, then pop open the battery compartment.
Wait several seconds, then close the battery compartment.
You may need to repeat the above sequence several times to unstick the iris. If that does not accomplish it, you will likely have to send the camera in for repair.
Once you have it working again, you should use the camera regularly to keep it from sticking again.
If it is a recent purchase go back to the retailer.
Try the Canon Web site Technical Support team once more, a low cost replacement may be ontainable
Broadly speaking digital camera are not repairable
The economics don't stack up and there is usually no new spares supply although a repairer may have accumulated stock of bits'n'pieces'n'pieces thatt may suit from other dud camera's and his charges will be high as mentiond
