Question about Sony PlayStation 2 (PS2) Console
Well i dont recommend but use some laser protective eye wear or just use a reflector while pressing the CD tray lock switch is pressed, if there is no light on the laser lense then there is a problem with the lens get it replaced!

Try this, it was the problem on ours. It wouldn't spin the disc or anything, when I went into browser it would say "No Data" I went to system configuration, then to digital out (optical) & it was set to "ON" I changed it to off, put in the game & it started right up. Not sure how mine got switched to ON, but I searched all over the internet & never found that mentioned as a possible cause. I just wish I would've figured it out B4 we went & bought a ps3 & traded in all our ps2 games since the 40gb ps3 won't play them. Hope your problem is as simple as this!

Tips for a great answer:
Put in an ordinary audio CD and play to notice if the CD is detected. If yes the optical is working, if not there is no laser scanning and the possibility that the laser head can be defective.
Now certain cleaner disks will not be tracked to run for cleaning as it is not read. Hence it will reject. So it is ideal to clean manually the laser head eye using a cotton bud with gentle pressure on the lens eye.
If there is no result then watch if the CD spins or tries to spin. If so the board seems to work unless a test is taken on the main board but the possibility of a defective optical head can be the suspected fault.
If any of the above seems otherwise we must recheck with possibilities of a malfunction of the main processor board
