Question about MicroNet Technology Titanium (TFDU16072A) Hard Drive

Bytecc 2.5 Mobile HDD Hotdrive

My friend gave me this portable hard drive but he hasn't got the software to go with it. He had been using it on a Mac, when I connect it to my PC no icon appears. Do I need to download a driver and if so can anyone give me a link to download from? It needs to work on Vista Home Premium.

Thanks in advance.

It is appearing in the disk management window as an icon but no letter. I think I'll have a go at getting it reformatted on the mac and see how it goes from there.

    Thanks for your help.

You don't need any specific software for Windows 2000 or above - the operating system will have the correct drivers built-in.

It should mount either on FireWire or USB (depends on which version you have - there's also a combo version).

If you're connecting via FireWire, you will need to make sure you are using a powered 6-pin FireWire connection. If your computer only has a 4-pin FireWire port, it won't provide power to the drive, so the drive won't spin up, and the system won't see it.

If you're connecting via USB, make sure you're connected to a USB 2.0 port. If you're connecting to USB 1.1, you need to connect both USB connectors on the supplied USB cable to the PC. One connector is data+power, and the other connector (the one that "branches off") is just power.

Check whether the device appears in Device Manager (hit Windows-Pause, or right-click My Computer go to Properties, Hardware, then click Device Manager).

It should appear as a hard disk drive.

Since your friend was using it on a Mac, it might be formatted as a Mac volume so Windows won't mount it as a drive letter.
Right-click My Computer, go to Manage, then click Disk Management. Either a window will pop up and ask you about initializing the disk, or an additional disk with "Unknown parititon" will appear as Removable Disk. Whatever you do, do not mess with any of the disk blocks with drive letters, especially C: as that's your system drive.

The easier method may simply be to ask your friend for format the disk as FAT32 for you. Then it'll mount in Windows and you can format it as NTFS if you need to.

Since it appears as an icon without a letter, you can click the corresponding row on the bottom part of Disk Management to select it. If there's a block to the right of it that says Unknown or Unrecognized partition, then it's probably the Mac partition. You can right-click on it and Delete Partition.

But again, if you're not comfy with Disk Management, and it's not inconvenient, just ask your friend to format it for you. Safer that way. :)

Your laptop's usb port may not have enough power to keep the portable hard drive running.

You may require additional power to the portable hdd by using a usb cable with 2 usb connectors.
or use a USB port that is powered.

It's possible to clone to this drive, but over the USB interface, it will be very slow. Firewire would be faster. It's also possible to boot from it, but again, it will be slower than an internal. What you've described, however, IS possible.

The click click click is the hard drive trying to spin up. Either the hard drive is not getting enough power, which is not likely since you have tried it on other computers, or the hard drive is bad.
You've had the hard drive for a few years and I would say it's at the end of it's life. They are not end user repairable, so your only choice left is to get a new one.

Looks like you need to Format the new drive.
Your computer can see it, but cannot access it, right?
You can right click on the new E: drive and select the Format option.
If that doesn't work, then you must right click on My Computer, and select Manage from the pop up menu.
Then click on the option Disk Management at the left.
Soon you'll get a graphic view of the hard drives currently installed on your system.
Now just select the drive you want to activate E:\, right click on the rectangled area, and select FORMAT.
Once the process is completed you will be able to store information, pictures, etc.

Lacie 250GB External Hardive to be used between a PC and a MAC

Be carefull when moving data from Macs to Windows etc. Your best bet would be to start again. It should work if you get your friend to put the data on the drive & copy it directly to your Mac. From there, you can safely copy data to the PC, but may have trouble accessing that same data after the PC has had it.
