Some people thing that changing belts is the answer to all things. It is not. Wow and flutter can be caused by bad belts, lack of lubrication, improper take up torque from a bad reel table or slip clutch and defective back tension methods. Why do people change a belt and sometimes even install a belt too tight and expect miracles? I don't know why. Maybe the same reason they will go to the effort to change a belt and be seconds away from pulling the flywheel out to oil it and never do. How to fix flutter & wow on a Gemini 500 XLii direct drive turntable

Direct drive turntables have electronically controlled speed. If the records you are playing are warped (not flat) that will cause wow & flutter. If that's not the problem then you might try connecting the turntable to a different power outlet using a long extension cord. Failing that, the turntable needs repair.

I play a tape in my Sony SL-5200 Betamax VCR. It plays normally for about 5-10 minutes and then the picture starts fluttering which lets out this loud buzz on the Hi-Fi audio track and cuts it out to mono....

It could be some kind of tracking problem. The cause could be dirt on the tape head, or perhaps something worn such as a drive belt etc. Check to see if it gets worse or better with the cassette nearly at the end of the tape or at the start of it. Indicating a tape tension problem, on the reels or drive.

Speed is too slow. Does the belt stretch over time and affect the speed? What else could be the problem

Yes belts do stretch over time, often you will get wow and flutter too with it. Replacing the belt could solve it. If it's old anyway it could do with replacing. Please make a note of how it fits before removing it. Belts are measured in MM (diameter), but with TT belts you need to measure the width.

Sony hmk-v82 turn table speed. The speed changes slightly all the time, tone in music goes up and down accordingly. What is the solution?

This is known as wow and flutter. It's generally caused by the belt being lose on a belt drive turntable or the motor on a direct drive one. The motor can cause it too on a belt turntable!

Pitch is not working correctly

a) "dirty" main power switch, comes from sparking when power switch has been used a lot (happens also with some CD/DVD players - makes them loose some power - consequently, focus and/or spindle will not work properly). Try cleaning it up or replacing it (bypassing it will tell you if the switch is really the problem).

b) bad contact on the speed control slider (try moving it while slightly pressing it downwards, see if there is any change, if there is, have it cleaned up or replaced)

c) a problem with electronic speed control, possibly a loose solder connection or a bad capacitor somewhere in the speed control circuitry. If the circuit has fuses in it check if they are all ok. I once had a problem with a turntable that had a fuse "partially" blown (people were using the turntable a lot for "scratching" which overheated the fuse but hadn't blown it out, yet it changed in resistance from zero ohms to a few hundred ohms - the turntable began to **** and the speed was changing).

d) none of the above, it could be something else that i can't think of right now

hope ya get it workin'

Marantz CP430 fault

Hello,

I have had the exact same problem with a CP430, Whether in Play Rewind or Fast Forward, after a short duration the tape stops. After a lot of Looking & thinking, I noticed that a few seconds prior to the tape stopping, the tape counter stops. (If you dismantle this unit be sure to work in an orgainsed fashion,& you will need some tiny Phillips head screwdrivers too) If your not confident then dont proceed.

The tape counter is driven by a belt, & on the spindle that drives the counter is a magnetic wheel, that runs past a sensor on a PCB.

I didn't have a replacement belt, so dismantled the unit, & chemically cleaned the Belt (cellulose thinners), until no more 'black' came off, in order to eliminate the possibility of tape slip, I also used a stiff toothbrush, to clean the plastic gears that drive the counter, as any resistance, will cause the belt to slip. I think the reset button had also been pushed hard, & bent the mechanism slightly, as it had a tight spot, so i adjusted the spindle, & finally lunricated the Counter gears (Not the Spindle & pulley, as its too close to the belt to introduce lubricant). Upon reassembly, The problem seems solved, the unit now plays records Rewinds etc, without any issues.

Its a tiny drive belt, & any resistance in the drive train, (dust / fluff / as tiny grit even) is enough to cause the belt to slip, & stop the counter which in turn stops the tape.

I hope this helps.

Thankyou

Teac P-988 Everything sounds slow/warped

not passing the "wow and flutter" specs, eh?
The most common cause of this is a loose or defective belt. An inferior belt will have varying thicknesses along it's length. When it hits a skinny part, it will slow slightly. When it hits the thick part, it will speed slightly. Overall effect is that the record sounds warped.
needledoctor.com has got some good stuff.
