Question about Dell 1700n Laser Printer

1 Answer

I have a Dell 1700 laser printer. During tornado, trees downed lined which landed in my yard. Anything with a power light on blew out. My computer just needed a new power supply, and it is fine now. I'm having trouble figuring out what to do about printer. Just don't have the money to take it to repair shop. I've seen the power supply board for sale, but not certain that is what I need. I can't find where it goes anyway. The little board that contains all the lights seems to be problematic, in that the green power light will not come on. Do I need to replace both boards: the power supply board and the small board in which lights are soldered?? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated

Thanks so much for your help. As soon as I opened it up, and saw the power supply board, it was evident that it was fried right behind the power cord plug. I'm just going to take the simple route, and buy a board on ebay. Saw one for $24 including shipping. If that doesn't work. I'll cross that bridge then. Again, I thank you for taking an interest and offering your advise. Your efforts are appreciated. Regards S

Well first it could be anything that blew on the device. First thing would be to check the power supply with a volt meter. Touch the barrel and the tip of the power supply and insure its sending the voltage that it specifies on the unit. If it isnt sending power the power supply blew. IF not it could be an internal problem. But let me know what happens from when you test the power supply with a volt meter and we will go from there. Thanks, Midwest-tek.

DELL Laser printer 1700/1700n

All flashing lights for the Dell 1700 series (1700, 1710, 1720 including those that have n or dn as part of the model) printers is a service related error. When double pressing the continue button twice quickly, the printer will give a secondary error code, narrowing down the printer part being effected. It is possible to even narrow the error code down even futher by double pressing the continue button and taking note of which combination of lights come on, wether they are steady or blinking. Most generally when this series of printers, when you get all flashing lights, something major is going on with the printer. It could be pointing to the fuser, or main board, etc. You can call dell warranty support and they will help narrow down which part is being effected. Most generally, what is being effected is not cost effective to get fixed if you are no longer under warranty.

How did you install the printer?
I have found that if you just let your computer recognise new hardware, it really has a hard time with the USB printing to the 1700's.

Originally there was a disk that came with the 1700 printer. You do want to use that.
During the install, you run the software, and then turn on the printer. (You can have the printer on during the install, but ignore the Windows Wizards that come up).
If you don't have the original 1700 install disk, you can download it from Dell.

The problem is with USB port configuration. These little 1700's are just a pain sometimes if not installed the way they were originally designed.
