In order to record in RAW format, you cannot have the selector on one of the Basic zones. You must have P, Tv, Av, M, or A-DEP selected. You should ten be able to see the RAW option on the menu.

Why am I no longer able to set my 60D camera to take RAW formatted pcitures

Hi,
In order to select RAW mode, first check if your camera is in either Manual(M)/(A)/(AV)/(Ev) modes. Then go to setting-picture format-RAW/RAW+Basic.
In order to edit the RAW picture, you need to update the RAW version if you are using Adobe Photoshop for editing your pictures.

Thank you!

I have a Nikon D3100 camera. Recently there is a black band at the top part of my pictures, about 1/4. This happens every other picture. It almost looks like the shutter does not open properly every other...

You apparently are shooting in both jpg and raw modes. I do that. So what you have is actually two pictures. The jpg picture is full screen and the raw (nef) picture has the black lines you describe.

I don't know why it does this other than to allow you to recognize which pictures is raw and which is jpg. It is not a problem and picture quality is not impacted in any way.

Your manual should explain fairly clearly the benefits of both formats. You can use the menu to change it to take only jpg or nef pictures and possibly other formats.

When I edit photos, unless I'm in a hurry, I usually make a copy of the NEF photo and edit that. You can make many more changes in an NEF photo than you can in a jpg photo.

In either case, I would suggest you always edit from a copy to protect the original. I think my D-90 allows the use of other formats in addition to jpg, but nef is the only raw format that Nikon uses.

Bought dlux2 but can't change from raw mode in menu to jpeg. Dont see anynjpeg/raw choice on menu.

The picture quality setting is in the REC mode menu. Your four choices are TIFF, JPEG Fine, JPEG Standard, and RAW. See the "Quality" section in the manual (page 74 in my copy). If you need a manual, you may download a copy here.

I have lost my camera book and need help .when I try to print pics at Walgreens computer will not load pics.it says no photos available.but I can take pics fine and look at them on cf card in camera b

You may download the manual and more from here.

Are you possibly shooting pictures in RAW format? Photo kiosks such as those at Walgreens won't recognize Canon RAW photos, only JPEGs. Check the camera's image quality settings, as described beginning on page 60 of the manual.

What does raw mean on the camera and when put on the laptop

Hey there,
A camera raw image file contains minimally processed data from the camera. This is mostly used for professionals who want the absolute highest quality from their photos. However, RAW photos are very very large in file size, and will fill up your memory card quickly.
I recommend shooting in the highest quality JPEG file format. This will give you great looking photos, but with a more manageable file size.
Hope this helps! And if it did, feel free to rate me :)

We have a Canon EOS 500D. After using it for 18 months we suddenly have a Raw notice and cannot print photos. We dont know where this has come from or to get rid of it. Advise please.

Sounds to me as if someone has set the image "Quality" to RAW files which are more for a professional or advanced amateur use. Page 70 of your owners manual will show you how to set this "Quality" to jpg. I'm going to include a screen shot of this page because it has diagrams and instructions far better then what I can explain just in type.

Also the RAW files you have must me downloaded to your computer, opened in your image software program and converted to jpg file format before you can print, e-mail or any other "normal" thing people do with jpg format.

RAW is just that the actual raw file of the image captured where as the jpg file format is the compressed version with corrections already made in camera. RAW files need correction in post processing.

I suspect you are using the Rebel's direct printing feature which can not process RAW file format, I don't think you want to print RAW as there has been not corrections.

I know this will help.

Here is the diagrams.

The camera will only let me take about 7 pics before saying the card is full

Try formatting the card, It probably contains files that are not deleted. You format the card in the setup menu. Make sure you have saved all images to the computer before formatting.

After taking 20 photos says memory card is full

You did not mention the make or model of the camera. Your symptoms seem to indicate you are using internal memory rather than the card. Card typically hold from 200-2,000 high quality photos (depending on the size of the card and the camera).

Another possibility is that you have a high end camera and are shooting in the RAW format. RAW is only for the more experienced users who post process their work. If this is the case switch to JPG.

Note reducing the picture size only makes the pictures lower quality and is only useful if you only post them on the web.

Choosing to shoot Raw images

If you have Rebel XTi (400D), press Menu button.

Under the 1st Tab, the first option is "Quality" - select it. You should see 8 options from "fine L" to "Raw". Move selection using the arrow keys, and select RAW.
