Question about Amana Heating & Cooling

Trying to connect a new dual capacitor for an a/c unit. Three wires came off the old one, blue to the motor, red to the contactor and a brown wire. The new capacitor has two black and 1 white connectors, whick one goes where.

The cap should be marked to with goes where. White is more than likely common which will go to the contactor. The other two one to the motor and one to the fan. May be marked C-C-F Compressor, Common,Fan

on the motor should be a diagram detailing the wires. brown white goes to either side of the capacitor and brown wire to other side of capacitor. hi speed goes to normally open contact on the indoor fan relay and the wire designated common on the motor goes to the other side of power from the relay contacts.

Yes, Red to Com, Compressor to Herm, Brown to Fan. You should also have another wire from the condenser fan going to the Com terminal.

Hi, the new motor takes its own capacitor to run it. This is what the 2- brown wires are for, one will have a white stripe. You will need to but a seperate run capacitor for this motor, a 5 uf, 7.5, or what ever it calls for. they should have told you when you bought the motor. It will have to spade connectors on it where the brown wires connect alone. Use the dual capacitor if that is what you have for the other 220 volt wires.Black and purple will be your 2 hot wires.You can connect either one to the old capacitor on the fan terminal and the other to the load side of the contactor, so when the contactor closes it will energize the motor.Or, take both the black and the purple wires and to the load side ( outlet side ) of the contactor, connect one to one side and the other to the other side. The line side is where your 2 hot wires that connect to the contactor from the incoming wires from the electrical box, you want to be on the other end. I would connect the black to the contactor load side and purple to the old capacitor as long as the old wiring is still on it as it has to be fed by a hot wire from the contactor. Each wire, blk, and purple has to have 120 volts to each one and you can get this a couple of ways. The contactor has several terminals that are not used and if you wire them on the outlet side, they will only be energized when the contactor is closed on a call from the stat, very easy to do. You will have to get a coulple of crimp on connectors to put on the ends of the wires, but the brown ones should already have them for this capacitor. Do not try to put the brown wires on the old run capacitor as you will burn out the new motor! Go get the small run cap for these 2 wires for about $10. I know that you can do this wiring change just remember the blk is hot 120, and purple is hot 120, = 240.volts. If you have removed all of the wires from the old capacitor, then use the contactor to connect to. The compressor wires must stay on the old run cap on the hermetic side and this old cap. must be fed by a hot wire from the contactor to the common terminal, that is marked with a C..If you look at the new motor diagram, it will show you also. Hi, the 2 - brown wires are for there own run capacitor they should have sold you. One of the browns will have a white stripe. The new cap has only 2- terminals and you put a brown on each side. The black and yellow wires are both hot which 1- will go to 120 volts on the load or out side of the contactor, and the same with yellow, 120 volts. This gives you 220 volts to run the motor. Look on the new motor and you will have a diagram or on a paper that comes in the box. The old motor used the dual cap to run the compressor to. The green is just a ground wire. Screw it to any metal part or screw. You should be able to put the black and yellow hot wires where the old black, red, or blue were as long as they are 120 volts which I am sure they are. Get a cheap tester when you go get the cap for the new motor, and check the old blk, red, and blue terminals to ground and you should have 120 volts on at least 2 of them. Put the new yellow to 1 and black to another, browns to the new cap and your off and running. Keep me posted. I do this everyday. Please be kind when rating me, thank you.

How do I wire a new condensor fan motor to the new capacitor? The old capacitor is longer and it has 3 terminals. the new capacitor is much smaller and oval. It has 2 terminals. the fan motor has 3 wires,...


Before attempting any of these recommendations, First disconnect all the power sources and check your wiring diagrams on the motor and condensing unit.
On the old capacitor if you look on the top near each of the three terminals. Are they marked, fan - C - herm? If they are that is a dual capacitor and that needs to stay because that is also your compressor capacitor.
The Red wire from the conductor is Run and it's connected to C on the old capacitor.
Follow the Yellow wire and see if it goes to the S or start terminal on the compressor, if it does then that is the Start wire for your compressor and it connects to herm on the capacitor.
For the fan motor a lot of times the wiring connections are printed on the motor label.
Check the label, Purple should be run and connect to C on the old capacitor.
Black should be Common and it connects to the opposite side of the contactor as the Red wire. If the Red wire connects to T1 then the Black wire connects to T2.
The Brown wire shoud be the start wire on the fan motor and it connects to the Fan terminal on the old capacitor.
Now if you want to use the new fan capacitor. Take the Purple wire from the motor and look for any marks (red paint or a dash) on or beside the terminals on the new capacitor. If there is an identifying mark then connect the Purple wire to that terminal, if no marks you can connect it to either terminal. Then you need a jumper wire from C on the old capacitor to the purple side of the new capacitor. Then take the brown wire and connect it to opposite terminal of the new capacitor.

The two brown wires go to the fans capacitor. The capacitor should always be changed with the fan motor.

It sounds like your unit has a dual capacitor. One side for the fan and the other for the compressor. All you will be doing (After rewiring the compressor wires as they were originally.) is abandoning the fan side of the capacitor, and wiring your new capacitor to the brown and brown with stripe wires. It does not matter which terminals the brown wires go on.

Black wire goes to contactor. On your capacitor the brown wire goes on one side the blue and the other wire from your contactor goes on the other sideof the capacitor. Russ

The best way to wire that motor is to connect a separate capacitor to it. The brown and brown w/white stripe go to the capacitor. The black and red wires go to the contactor.

I think this is a double problem post,so I will answer the top first.
The fan capacitor may be bad or the motor it's self is seizing up and will need replaced.

Second portion of post:
  1. Brown and brown/white go to the new capacitor(If you didn't get a new one with the motor,You will need to)Should be 7.5 mfd
  2. Black To the contactor where the black was originally connected
  3. yellow to the contactor where the red was originally connected

Wiring compressor


The two terminal cap is only for the new fan motor. Connect the compressor wire back where you found it, on the 3 terminal cap. It's the terminal marked, "herm". The "common" terminal on the 3 terminal cap must still be connected to one side of the 220 power at the contactor. One side of the 220 goes to the common on the compressor. The other side of the 220 goes to the run winding on the compressor AND the common terminal on the 3 terminal capacitor.
