Question about Televison & Video

1 Answer

Hi, I let my friend borrow my tv and his rabbit chewed thru the plug cable in several places, so the whole flex needs removing and replacing. Not a clue what I'm doing to be fair, so any advice on what cable I need to use and a rough idea of if it's something I can do myself would be great. Please bear in mind my DIY skills usually incorporate a hammer and not much else! Many thanks, Vic

Hi first let me tell you something about the work involved.
1, getting the case off can be a nightmare as its held by screws and clips getting the clips wrong and forcing them can break the circuit board
2 say you get the case off you then going to either need to unplug the wire from the circuit board its just a push fit and then with the new cable you will either need to by the exact cable from tv repair shop so as you have the same clip or you can use the old clip and splice a new wire onto it( this is not recomended as it only takes someone to pull the mains wire and then if it comes undone inside the telly it will do damage and possibly give someone a shock)

you can get the wire from most tv repair shops and they will sell you one if you do this it wont require you to do any splicing together as it will come with the push fit connector on the end and this plugs into the circuit board so its not soldered in place it just a push fit.

3 even though the telly is unplugged certain parts will still be live and can give you a very nasty shock and this will cause you to short the telly out.

if you can get the cable then thats the easy part but getting the case off is a nightmare as if you do get all the screws out and the clips you then have to unplug several wire connectors to allow you to remove the back enough to work on the telly.

its up to you but it is risky and you could damage the telly and with a telly like this i would say your best option is your local repair shop but take the telly to them as this will save you money for paying for transport, it wont cost much to pay the shop to do it as long as the telly wasnt plugged in when the cable was chewed through, if it was then this could be more serious and could cost a hell of a lot more to get put right it may even be not financially worth doing if it did short out when the cable was chewed through.

i would make sure first that the cable was chewed through when the tv was turned off at the socket if the plug was switched on then the chances are the tv will cost more to fix than its worth and then your best option would be to sell it on the auction site as faulty.

if it was not plugged in when it was chewed through then all it needs is the power lead replacing and this dont involve any solder as its only a push fit but the shop will know how to take the case off to do this without damaging the telly.

if i was you i would leave it to the shop as its not worth damaging it for the price of a cable.

double check first that it was unplugged at the socket when the cable was chewed through else i would cut the losses and get a new tv, a shorted out set can be a nightmare to fix, their not like the old sets where it would short out then you could just change a fuse in the back of the telly these have graphics cards and other parts which would have shorted out if it was plugged in.

let me know if you need further assistance ok

plz rate this solution as i have a whole page of unrated posts, thanks

My dog chewed through the power cord. Can I replace this part without having to buy a whole new one? It's not mine someone was letting me borrow it.

You should be able to find a replacement at a hardware store. Take the plug end with you to get any assistance in determining the cord wire guage.

Vertical lines on tv

Possibly a bad HDMI cable connection. Remove cable,
then reconnect, with the plugs firmly in the jacks. If that doesn't
work, then borrow an HDMI cable from a friend and see if that
fixes the problem.

Can rabbits eat bamboo

Rabbits can eat whatever they want....Sorry, just a bit punchy. Rabbits are fine to eat untreated bamboo, it is just a grass. By untreated I mean bamboo that was not used for furniture. Just the raw fresh or dried bamboo is fine. There are several hutch enclosures made of bamboo that they love chewing on.

You´re just right: Finallizing is a delicate procedure because you never know exactly how long it takes. If there is any interruption, the whole data is lost forever. That´s why finalizing should always be done with the AC-plug. Get it repaired and put this rabbit to court (smile).
Best wishes

No picture thru hdmi but picture thru RCA plugs

I had this exact same problem, or rather my friend did after I borrowed his PS3. You see when I borrowed it, the console configured the HD output to work with my TV, If this happened to you, there is a fix, With the HD cable connected, turn off the power to your PS3 and then turn it back on again. But when you turn it on, hold down the power button until you see something on the screen. When you hold down the power button of the PS3 when you are turning it on, it completely resets the video settings to the most basic settings (480p I think) so that it'll work on any TV or monitor. Once you can then get something on the screen, you can configure the video settings to match the TV you are hooking up to.

How/where can I get the power cord replaced? The dog chewed through the existing one

Any hardware store should sell 3 core wire flex for cable replacement.
Make sure it is at least 2.5mm squared cable as this is for a heater.
You will probably need a new plug too, as the existing one is probably moulded.

Connections inside the heater may be crimped Ring terminals. These are available from auto shops, and must use crimp pliars to connect them.

Mark the heater connections before removing the wires, and make sure the earth wire is connected securely.

How to hook converter box to rabbit ear TV

Hi, Sorry Vicki, Play Taps for the Relic. Those old tvs don't have the type of tuner that will even accept an input from a converter. The good news is there are quite a few good tvs out there that don't cost a fortune and you will really like the new picture they are capable of. Good Luck to you!

Hi Meanmama

Is there still enough cable left from the headphones to the chewed end for comfortable use? If not you might have to replace the whole cable length.

If not, you can just fit a stereo mini jack (3.5 mm diameter) on the chewed end.

For this you will need a soldering iron and some basic soldering skills.

Are you able to solder a plug onto a lead?
