Question about Vacuums

Replacing Switch & cord on OLD Eureka upright 403B or 403S (can't read)

I have ordered and received what seems to be the correct switch and replaced the belt, but cannot figure out how to get to the switch. I also need to shorten or replace the cord because it is severely worn where it bends onto the winding posts. This old vac worked well until recently and is the property of our church and we can't afford to replace it right now.

Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure.

It sounds to me that you have a handle switch / cord and if you shorten the cord you need to also purchase a cord protector. Usually it may be covered by screws or a pop rivet and you would have to drill out the pop rivet and the switch cover will come off and then replace it with new pop rivets or screws and use the cord protector if you shorten the cord nut I would not advise it because the longer the cord the more vacuuming you can do without going from plug to plug. Suggest that you check with you local vac dealer in your area or use some suggestion I will give you listed below.
So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions.

The handle for my Eureka 5893 AVZ was getting very hot. Finally, the wires around the switch melted and the vacuum will not work. What is wrong? Is the switch bad? Nothing else appears to be wrong.

usually if a connection gets hot enough to start melting it is usually a loose connection or high current. more than likely the switch is bad if you replace it with the same type of switch and it gets hot check the motor. make sure it is clean and isn't jammed

My vacuum (Eureka Bagless Model 2961 AVZ) will not START!

Had exactly the same problem with my upright Eureka Model 5893 bagless. Eventually, the handle would get hot, and finally it just quit. When handle was disassembled, the wires were melted and it was toast. Ordered a switch after talking to several repair men. Talked to Eureka, too, and they were absolutely no help. Cheap wiring and switch made in China. Good luck trying to find a switch. vacuum-depot.com has switches, so you might try there, but make sure you get the 3-prong switch (same switch used on Eureka's Genesis). It is Part #27871.

Broken on/off switch

I have the same vacuum and the on/off switch wasn't working any longer so I took the cover off to find out that the wiring got so hot that it melted through the wire coating and plastic frame.

Will not start ...I get a momentary flicker of power about every 3rd or 4th time that I flick on the power switch. Outlet is fine / Plug looks good / cord looks good / I see no obstructions ........Would appreciate any helpful thoughts ....Trying to get Mom's Eureka 2961AVZ back up and running. Thanks

Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. It sounds to me that you may have a bad switch or the worst scenario would be a bad motor and or armature, and the armature is almost the cost of the new motor, so I would replace the motor, but check the switch and the cord because sometimes the cord looks good but there might be broken wires inside the cord that you can’t see. If the vacuum is less than one year old the motor would be covered under the factory warranty if one year and maybe the switch as well. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions.

Here's my story, posted on other solutions here, especially on the Model 5893; many people with burned wiring and switches. Major fire hazard imo! Okay, here's the skinny on my upright Eureka POS vacuum:
