Digital cameras really are battery hogs (especially cameras that use only 2 AA's). Some brands of batteries will have problems just starting up the camera. This may be true even if they're alkaline, brand new, and just out of the package.
Recommend rechargeable NiMH batteries only for your camera. Believe Canon even states this in their user manual. Walmart sells these for around $7 for a package of four (about $15-19 for the batteries with charger). Keep in mind they'll save you big bucks in the long run over alkalines, AND they'll last for at least 100 pictures per charge (and probably many many more). You'll be very pleased with their performance, and may slap yourself for not buying them sooner. When at the store, look on the package for a power rating of at least 2500 mah.

Switching between Shooting and Playback.....32 .... Please note that Canon digital cameras are intended for personal use and should never be used .... Do not operatethe flash with dirt, dust or other items stuck to its lens. ..... PowerShot A520:.
Nov 30, 2007 - It was a fix for a Canon A520, but am not sure if it would work for ..... I have a Canon Powershot A540 which will not turn on and lens is stuck out extended.... (even when they are new) in camera mode and not playback mode.
hi, there's a capacitor on the main pcb that you need to change just to save the time and date even you turning off your camera. bring to service center and maybe the service charge is cheap.
If this is doing this with new batteries, then the firmware will need to be upgraded. You can purchase the update kit which is fairly difficult to understand but is possible. For the same price you can send the camera in to Canon and they will fix it for $50
