Fn key doesnt work

The Fn key on laptops is only used in conjunction with other keys.

look at your KB you should see some icons that are the same colour as the Fn key eg on my laptop the F5 key has 2 TV symbols, this pressed while holding the Fn key turns on the external display port, perfect for connecting to a projector, other combinations are for turning WiFi off and on, mute, volume control and brightness.

Hope this helps you out. 694d0c27-d03d-4af6-9753-6f2d5ca68581.jpg

Wouldn't it be NICE to know what laptop you are referring to

Oh well...........maybe one day

By factory default settings the display should automatically show in the external VGA monitor. (TV. Whatever)

HOWEVER;
Your laptop has at least 3 display options;
1) Internal monitor of laptop ONLY
2) Internal monitor of laptop AND external VGA monitor
3) External VGA monitor ONLY

By factory default settings the display should automatically show in the external VGA monitor. (TV. Whatever)

Press, and hold the Fn key down, and at the same time tap once on the Display Toggle-Over key.
Which key is the Display Toggle-Over key?
Dunno. Laptop manufacturer and model number wasn't stated.

(One of the F keys at the top.
Generally;
Acer = F5
HP = F4
Lenovo/IBM = F10
Dell = F8, unless it's Alienware - F6)

Did that? That's how it worked on your friend's TV?
Then your TV is the problem.
Settings I assume. NOT a TV tech.

I connected RGB from toshiba m45-s169 to tv. Had a signal but now cant get it back. Tried updating video driver. Help?

You can switch to an external monitor, TV or data projector by two methods. 1. Connect the external monitor to the laptop's video port, power up the external monitor first and the laptop. The video information will automatically switch to the external monitor. 2. If you power up the laptop first then you can switch the video output to the external monitor by pressing the Fn key and one of the Function keys, depending upon your make and model laptop. You can also toggle between the external monitor or both LCD screen plus the external monitor or back to LCD screen only by pressing the Fn key plus one of the function key a few times. Here is a list of key combinations for some of the laptops :- IBM ThinkPad = Fn + F7 HP and Compaq = Fn + F4 Toshiba = Fn + F5 Dell = Fn + F8

I connected my laptop to my LCD TV using VGA cable. I changed the mode to VGA external monitor. Image/video appear perfectly fine during start up. but right after windows logged in for like 5 second the...

Easy way:
Press and hold Fn key, and then look at the F1-F10 keys.. Most likely it is F7, and has a picture like a computer screen.
So, press and hold Fn key, and then press F7 (or whatever key it is for your laptop). This will change your "presentation" settings, and thus switch back and forth from laptop screen, laptop screen + external screen (TV), just external screen (TV).
-------------

If this doesn't work as you expect, just try:

Instructions for Windows XP:

Open the Display Properties window by:
Start -> Run -> %windir%\system32\control.exe desk.cpl,@0,3
(this is the same window where you can change screen resolution).

There you will see two or more "screens", labeled: 1, 2, 3.

Click on "1", and you'll see:

[X] Use this device as the primary monitor
[X[ Extent Windows desktop onto this monitor

Click on "2", this is your TV.. Mark

[ ]
[X] Extent Windows desktop onto this monitor

Then change the resolution to 800x600.
Click Apply

=> now your TV should start showing you a picture.
You can move your mouse between the laptop screen and the TV screen.

If you want just the TV, you can make "2" to be your primary monitor, by clicking on [X] Use this device as the primary monitor.

How do send monitor signal to my tv

It depend on what input your TV has the what output the laptop has.
Ideally you would connect over VGA cable. Your Laptop is very likly to have a VGA out put but if your TV is old it may not have a VGA input.

If not you will need to connect Via S-Video cable which all TV's & laptops have. Note that neither VGA or S-Video will carry audio so you will need a seperate audio cable if you want the sound to come through the TV speakers. This is normall just a wire with mini stereo jack on each end.

Dont forget to rate me if this helps

Monitor is blank!!!!

Firstly, the LCD+external setting will switch one or the other or both on.

Secondly, if you go into your display properties (or even the advanced page where your video card additional features are) you can usually select which monitor is "primary".

I suspect that your external display is primary, and the LCD screen is not "enabled" or used as part of the desktop.

The settings are all there, it's just a matter of finding them (depending on what video card is in whatever laptop you have)

This might have happened in the first place if you accidentally hit "Fn" and one of the "F" keys up the top. Fn + F6 on my laptop will switch LCD/external monitors on and off. (for example) There is usually a little blue picture on one of the "F" keys to denote that function.
