Gateway too proprietary? PLEASE HELP!

I took out the 30 gig hd running win 98 after running fdisk and creating one partition. I then put it in an external hd reader connected to my hp running vista (that shouldn't matter right)? It told me I had to format the HD so I did.

When I reinstall the HD into my gateway 450 desktop and tell the bios to boot from cd rom, it says "please remove all discs and press any key to restart". It does this with and without any disc in the drive! Pressing any key results in nothing more than a repetition of the error.

The lights work on my cdrom so i'm assuming it works.
WHY ISN'T IT RECOGNIZING THE CDROM TO RELOAD THE OS? I'm trying to load windows xp home btw.

When I try installing my new sony cd-dvd rom drive (just in case the cd rom drive is bad) it does not recognize that either :-(

I am moving and need to either trash this computer or get it to work!!!!!

Thank you anyone who can assist me :-)

- I don't know how to change the bios "settings". I just installed a working hard drive with win xp and reinstalled my new sony cd-dvd rom. I am currently not seeing the cd rom (marked as slave) in the bios. Could that be because this HD does not have the software loaded yet?? The computer is hanging at "start windows normally" and the countdown has stopped.

I will attempt to reboot again. Is GATEWAY so proprietary in their bios settings (as I've been told by many) that it won't recognize other hard ware?

HOW would I know how to change (and what to input) for 'CORRECT BIOS SETTINGS"??

Thanks :-)

- OK... new problem :-(

I installed a dell 40 gig hd and my system (gateway) now says "hardware conflict" please check my documentation (which I no longer have). I guess now I am looking for WHAT to tell my cpu in the bios??

I NEED A HAMMER! LOL

HELP!!

- windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem. Could not read from the selected boot disc. Check boot path and disk harware.

DOES THIS MEAN THAT I NEED TO CHANGE MY SETTING FROM MASTER TO CS? (I set the cdrom which isn't being recognized yet to slave).

I don't want to do all this changing if that is not what this error message means.

Thanks,

Michele :-)
