Yes, overheating is the likely problem -- dust inside the laptop is a good (though unwanted) insulator.
Turn the computer off.
Disconnect the AC power.
Remove the battery.
Purchase a can of compressed-air, and give your computer a "blow-job" -- shooting through every possible vent and port on your laptop.
Also, check that the fan(s) "inside" the computer are working correctly, i.e., not seized-up.
