More likeley to have bad caps in the power supply, that is the first place to look, see example of failed VIEWSONIC monitors due to bad caps: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums
VA 730 may have the same chassis as VA720. If the cpas are bad, you should replace them with PANASONIC FM or FC series caps from DIGIKEY. Your college should have good electronics test equipment to repair these monitors.

What voltage do i need for my ViewSonic VA720

Monitors and PCs (amongst other things) use a fairly standard power cable. You should not need to worry about the specifics as there is generally no transformer needed for a monitor.

Have just hooked up my Viewsonic VA720 moniter as the main moniter to a new laptop that I have. The laptop is an ACER Travelmate 6293 running windows XP. When I come to start up my computer each morning...

You most likely have a capacitor that has changed value. When a capacitor goes bad it will work after it heats up. Sometimes a bad cap will have a bulging top or show signs of leakage. Sometimes can only be checked with a meter.

Take a look at the capacitors and see if you have any weak one. An obvious way to spot one would be one bubbled up on top. A bad cap won't always be bubbled up. The monitor probably can operate until the voltage drops under 8 volts. Also possible if power supply check out good would be a weak backlight inverter.

ViewSonic VA720

The VA720 I have has 4 screws from the back: 1 at each bottom corner and 2 in the middle lower at the base. Remove screws and carefully pry the front and back halves apart. They snap together. Usually working the bottom apart first is easiest.
