Question about PC Desktops

1 Answer

I have a Toshiba Satellite P100 laptop which I bought in New Zealand. I think the model comes from the USA. Part of my screen is flickering. It runs vertically from the top to the bottom of the screen and the flicker is 2 inches wide. I can start my computer as normal but the flicker stays constantly. I can't read the screen behind the flicker or see my pointer. Can you tell me what is wrong with it and how to fix it? I have already tried the save mode and restart points but both don't work. I have an upto date Norton 360 antivirus complete package which I update weekly. John

Good morning, Kevin!
Sounds like an LCD problem. You can verify this by hooking up an external monitor. The external monitor will probably show a good display.
After verification of the problem, you may want to try to replug the LCD cable at both ends, just to see if that corrects the situation.
If that resolves things, all is well and good. If not, you may need a replacement LCD.
If the external monitor shows the same display, you may have a motherboard problem.
Hope this information is of some help.

You could have a defective screen - a defective inverter or a CCFL lamp.
To determine if you have a LCD screen or video card problem, read this and follow the instructions.

Defective CCFL backlight, it may have the following symptom:

  • Screen flashs on red/pink and off.
  • Picture stays on in red and slowly be come normal.
  • Picture flickering with dim display.
  • Picture flickering on and off.
All these symptoms indicate that the LCD backlight lamp (CCFL Lamp) has reached the end of the life and all you need to do is replacing the CCFL lamp

Connect an external monitor to your laptop and power it up, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight.

Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight and it could be the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out or burnt out, most likely this is the case.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.

Is the printer compatable with the new laptop that I have just bought? My printer is an HP DeskjetF380 and my laptop is a Toshiba Satellite A300-1J1. Is there any simple functions that I can follow so that...

If you’re new Toshiba laptop is running windows vista, the answer is yes. You will need to go to www.hp.com and click on the support tab. This will allow you to type in your model number of you printer so you can download the latest drivers for the printer. After you type in you model number and click search, the website will ask you what version of windows you are running. The options cover both Vista and windows XP. Just pick and you will be able to download the driver with software or just the driver.

Need new / 2nd hand Toshiba satellite laptop motherboard

Hi timlondonuk,

I don't know if you've ever replaced the motherboard in a laptop, but it can be a serious chore - even damaging to the LCD connector and other devices if you're not careful. Oftentimes the cost of a replacement board is 50-75% of the cost of a new laptop, so you might consider that venue.

If you provide a model number we can help you find prices for the board.
