Question about Canon EOS 400D / Rebel XTi Digital Camera
I read that custom function 8 turns the flash off, so I guess that should be checked first thing.
This web blog talks about a microswitch in the hotshoe that may be being held down by a spring or possibly stuck or broken:
If the camera is indeed equipped with the microswitch, you might try spraying some compressed air into it, in case some dust is not allowing it to make contact.
Of course, the zenon bulb, flash capacitor, or small step-up transformer could have gone bad, but those things usually last for years.
It could possibly be a slightly loose ribbon connector, but that would require disassembly to check.
I assume the flash is indeed turned on in the menu.
Other than those things, it might need servicing, which will probably be around $100. You might take the camera by a repair shop just to see what they say.
Good luck, hope this helps, and thanks for using FixYa.
