Question about Craftsman Garden

1 Answer

I have a craftsman (poulan) 16inch 2.0 chainsaw. It will start at full throttle and rev up and then die. I have put a carb kit in it, replaced the fuel line and filter and replaced the reed valve and gasket. Still has the same problem. I am missing something but am not wise enough to figure it out.It has compression and I can pull the starter rope and watch fuel travel through the line to the carb. If I remove the pump cover there is fuel in the chamber.

SOURCE: need to rewind craftsman chainsaw pull rope.

I have tried to do this many times and have yet to suceed, believe me it's not worth the fustration and the extra days in hell you will spend from cussing.

Take to a repair shop, they can do it quickly and cheaply when you consider how difficult this is for the ordinary person. (me)

I can't find your model number at but in all the chainsaws that I have worked on the starter rope comes in the cover which is held on by usually 4 or so screws. I suggest that you go to the site I listed and look at the 42 CC engine (they have a parts manual for it) before removing anything else. Let me know if I can help further.

SOURCE: poulan starter rope

to fix starter rope first you must wind spring and place back in housing. just grab spring by middle and wind ,you will have to get it smaller than housing hole. One end should hook to a tab at housing rest of it sets inside itself. once set in housing dont let go, insert rope housing over top & screw in. rope housing should have some return spring to it when pulled. if rope is not tight on return pull simply add one winding to spool. hope it helps!

I have the kit craftsman chainsaw 18 inch, with 42 ml engine. The problem is when you finally get it started, it dies when you give it gas. I need an answer please?

I see this problem a lot, so I just decided to research the problem. Yes, it is a known problem with chainsaws. Put down to fuel starvation for a number of reasons.
dirty/stale/contaminated gas
clogged fuel filter
clogged air filter
incorrect carb gas to air mixture
wood particles in carb jet
loose carb

I have a 2150 super clean 2.1cc. i will fire and start up. it runs for about 1 or 2 seconds and dies. i have changed gas and plug. cleaned air filter.

remove and clean out your carb and inspect the diaphram and if it is stiff or winkled bad replace it, this ethanol that they put in gas raises havoc with fuel lines and gums up carbs and makes diaphrams stiff, I would put a kit in it and also replace your primer bulb while you are at it

The saw is a poulan 3416 ,2 yr old, purchased new. the problem is starts ok 6 primer pushes idles ok then will either die after first cut or as soon as you pull trigger

Run too lean, this is fuel starvation, remove the fuel line from the tank and replace the filter on the end, check the fuel hose from the tank up to the carb for leaking or cracking.

Starts well..yet dies on full throttle. gas good, spark plug changed.

Running too lean, not enough fuel reaching the engine at full revs, start by replacing the fuel filter in the tank, if no better, make a small adjustment to the carb screws, 1/4 turn out on each, and try again, do not go more than 1/2 turn or you may just be compensating for a fuel blockage problem in the carb.

My Poulan will start up but then when I try and give it more throttle it dies or even when I let off the throttle to idle it will die. Is this fuel line o dos the carb. need to be cleaned? How do I...

It sounds very like a fuel issue, before diving into remove the carb check the easy stuff first, drain the fuel tank and fill with fresh fuel, pull the fuel hose out and check the condition of the filter on the end,any doubt replace it, check the condition of the fuel hose up to the carb for cracks or signs of age. Let us know how you get on

Carb rpl and adjustment

you have 2 screws marked H and L. With the engine running, turn the L (low) screw for best idle. Then for the H (high) screw, Hold at full throttle, turn screw, and listen for smothest and fastest revs.

Apr 15, 2010 | Poulan Pro 42CC 2 Cycle Chainsaw, 18"

1 Answer

It cuts out at full throttle.

Check the muffler and air cleaner for plugging. Try turning the H jet needle CCW about 1/2 to 3/4 turn which should make it 4-stroke at full throttle. Proper setting is for the engine to 4-stroke at full throttle, but immediately 2-stroke when cutting. (CW turning of H makes it leaner) See a Poulan servicing dealer for a rebuild kit. Be sure to check the fuel filter in the tank for plugging. Hope this helps!
