Question about Compaq Computers & Internet

1 Answer

If I had someone work on my computer and now the internet provider is saying I don't have a modem. Does that mean the person I had work on the computer took it or could there be another explanation? I've used that same computer for internet access in the past with no problems.

Take a look at the "back" of your desktop computer.
Look for a "square" socket, with 4 (not 8) parallel gold wires inside the socket.
You may see _two_ such sockets, side-by-side -- if you do, you certainly _do_ have a dial-up analog modem.
If the socket has 8 wires, it is your network-port (connect an Ethernet cable into that socket).

Click Start
Right-mouse-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click Hardware.
Click Device Manager.
Is there a "branch" of the hardware "tree" for 'modem' devices?
Is the modem listed in GREEN, or is it coloured YELLOW or RED,
meaning that the software for the modem is not correctly installed.

Cant get my dell inspiron 1100 to recognize my modem after reinstalling installing xp system

Oh my goodness, who uses a modem? Please don't tell me you get on the internet using a phone line and modem.

Ohh Internet Modem as his first sentence says. I'm thinking that means he has a high speed modem from a internet service provider. Ok, I would suggest that you remove the power cord, remove the battery, turn the laptop over and find the cover that houses the wireless modem and remove the antennas (black and white cables) from the wireless card, then remove the wireless card from the slot. Now press and hold the power button for 30 seconds, then put everything back together and reboot.

Cannot remember my w-f password

If you lose or forget your password, you can usually get it from your modem or your Internet service provider.
  • 1 Look on your modem. This is the box that your Internet service provider gave you when your Internet service was installed. Some Internet Service providers put your wireless password directly on the box along with your user-name. A modem may or may not be separate from a wireless router, which sends out the wireless signals. If you have two boxes and are unsure which is which, look at both.
  • 2 Call your Internet service provider if you cannot find a password on the modem. You can also try online customer service through your service provider's website if you are able to get Internet access apart from your wireless connection.

  • 3 Talk to a customer service representive and ask to retrieve your password. You may be required to change it. Be prepared to provide security information that the service provider has on file, such as your Social Security number, phone number, address or another personal security question.

Connected wireless to router, excellent signal, but unable to connect to internet.

connected to wireless router with excellent signal may not means you are connected to internet. make sure your modem provided by internet service provider has signal! connect your computer to modem directly bypassing router. If you are online that means your internet is functional. Then connect modem to your Linksys router and use your wireless to log on to internet.
Your router wireless signal active and excellent means you are connected to router not necessarily the internet. The modem supplied by your internet service provider with active internet should be connected to you router on WAN port!
    good luck!!

Internet works fine coming out of the modem, however when I hook up my router through the modem, it says local network is connected but there is no internet connection.

Check the gateway IP and DNS IPs.Don't assign DNS Auto in Router.assign it manually .obtain the DNS from your Internet Service provider.

first remove the router from the picture and connect the modem straight to the computer and see if you can go online or not. If you are still not able to go online then it means that the internet is not coming from the service provider.

If you are able to go online with the modem, then it means that you need change some settings either on modem or on router. You may get in touch with the person on this link. i am sure he can help you out. Link

I cant log on to internet

first you must have an ISP Internet Service provider contract which will provide you with a modem and leads you can choose either a dial up,usb,or an ethernet connection to connect to the internet or if you have a laptop you can choose a wireless usb modem which can work on a desktop aswell once you recieve the modem just insert the disk provided and follow the prompts to set up your new internet connection
during the setup process you will be asked for a password I suggest you make a log of all pass words used outside of your computer incase of memory lapses
check the password make sure its exactly how you provided to your ISP internet service provider make sure the Caps lock is on/off which ever applies to your ISP contract
check your computers settings ie: firewall also he might have a default internet setting
check the leads from the modem/router whether usb, ethernet make sure they are not bad/faulty and have secure connections and try different ports
click start control panel administrive tools computer management device manager scroll to network adapters + to expand any yellow ! ? or a red x will mean that the driver is corrupt and needs to be updated

    hope this helps

    Wireless router to modem problems

Since it says network cable unplugged on the computer when wired to the router, you need to check these first:

â Make sure that the Ethernet cable is connected from the modem to the router’s Internet (WAN) port and the computer to the numbered port of the router. The computer should used to be connecting to the Ethernet port of the modem, if not; you should contact your ISP first.
â Make sure that the Ethernet adapter/LAN card on your computer is working properly. You can check that on the device manager of your computer.
â If those are all working fine that would mean the router is not yet configured for Internet access or we can say that the settings for the provider are not synchronized with the router.

To configure the router, you can do these general steps:

    1. Connect the computer to the numbered port of the router and the modem to the router’s Internet (WAN) port.
    2. Turn off the computer, router and modem.
    3. Turn on the modem first, wait for the lights to stabilize then turn on the router. As soon as the lights are stabilized, you can turn on the computer and check for internet connection.

However, if the Internet connection still does not work. That means there are additional settings needed to be done. You can message me about the name of your ISP and I will provide you the specific steps you need.

    DSL Modem

That means that the phone is interfeering with the broadband. Often you fix this kind of problems by replacing the broadband filter. If it does not work after replacement it means there is a problem either with phone line or with broaband provider.
In this case contact first ISP (broaband provider), then your phone company to locate the problem.
Most likely it is the filter.
