Motherboard replacement vs. New Computer

I have HP Pavilion a405n that I have figured out the motherboard has gone bad. Does anyone know how much a new motherboard will cost? Or would it be cheaper to purchase a new computer? I don't need anything fancy just something to get to the internet and to check emails.

Depends upon the mother board chip specification the price will vary, you have to explore the market for the price

Replaced motherboard &hard drive in hp pavilion, now it will not recognize reovery cd

Replacing major hardware in a computer makes it a whole new computer. The motherboard is the operative part here that is causing your problem. When you replace a motherboard it becomes a new machine entirely. It won't recognize the recovery CD because it doesn't recognize your computer as the same machine it was loaded on. You will have to buy a new copy of windows to put on your computer.

Try the display on a different PC. The on board video may be defective, if so you will need to buy a new video card. Check to see what type you need. Good luck. I hope this helps...Have a good day.

Took our HP Pavilion DV6500 to the local service center and because the screen does not illuminate when the system is on, they are telling me the motherboard is bad. Have you heard of this problem...

Hi,

Yes the service center is correct and this type of problem is common with HP motherboards.

If you do have extended warranty this is still valid the of course HP will repair or replace the motherboard for you at no cost. All you have to do is contact HP.

I updated my BIOS on an HP Pavilion a430n now it wont boot up, the computer starts with the fans running on high. There isn't a boot screen or anything just blank. Help!

Sorry for some bad news, but unless you know someone who would know how to unbrick your motherboard from a bad bios flash.. its gone. They recently came out with new boards that have protected firmware, if anything like this were to happen it would auto reflash the original bios to the board. Hope this helps :-S

I have an old computer (not this one)which uses

How do you "warm" the computer, so that it will start properly?

Take a close look at the motherboard.
Look for those round "towers" with "silver" coloured caps.
They are capacitors.
If any caps are _not_ flat, i.e., they are bulging,
or if any caps show brown "rust" on top of the caps,
then those capacitors on the motherboard have gone bad.

Before your motherboard _completely_ dies, backup "everything" to an external disk-drive, verify that the backup has worked, and then either "trash" the motherboard, and replace it. You'll have to reinstall Windows onto the new motherboard -- find the CD/DVD set that you used to install XP.

If I were you, I would replace the motherboard with the same model as Hp use´s...
When you try to find another compatible board you will have some problems due to exclusive computer case..sometimes you need to adapt things...too bad...it´s better to repair with original board....

I have a hp Parilon dv6000. The screem has gone

This is almost always an "inverter" or "backlight", which are both relatively inexpensive and easy to replace. An Inverter can run about $60 for the part itself, and a backlight about $5.00 .However to fix either problem ,you will have to take your screen apart. Almost anyone can replace an inverter with some common hand tools and a little care. I would not recommend trying to replace the backlight unless you are highly skilled at screen repair.
The bad news is that this can also be caused by a problem on your motherboard.

HP Pavilion dv6700 faulty video card.

The HP Pavilion DV6700 has nVidia GeForce Go 8400M GS on-board video, so if the video is truely faulty, then you will need to replace to whole board. This product is covered under a 1 year warranty also, so I would call up HP and try to get a replacement for the board. A cost of a new board is going to run between $120 to $150 dolloard depending on what site you order it from.
