SOURCE: Plasma cutter is burning through electrodes

Try turning down the juice. Tungsten is very durable, but is prone to melt also at excessive torch output.

SOURCE: if you have a old plasma cutter can you swap ot

There are 3 commonly used methods manufacturers use to initiate an arc. High Frequency Start, Mechanical Spring back, and a Pilot Arc. You can swap any kind of plasma torch on your machine providing the torch is designed for the type of arc initiator your machine uses.

SOURCE: spectrum 2050 plasma cutter .

Check compressed air pressure is in limits otherwise unit will cut out. Try adjusting the pressure up. also make sure the supply pressure is correct as it may not be your plasma cutter at fault.

SOURCE: Plasma cutter started cutting at an angle even

notice the direction of cut. one edge will be straight and one beveled. the side you need should always be cut in that direction. example: if pulled the the right edge will be straight and if pushed the left edge will be straight.

Miller 375 x-treme fires about 30 seconds then stops it doesn't stay running, no trouble lights...

Have you watched to see if the pressure light comes on right before shutdown? If so you may need to add a tank right next to the torch base to address the pressure drop assuming your air source is able to deliver adequate volume to the cutter continuously and you currently have more than 25 feet of hose between cutter and compressor. It might not hurt to check the internal filter as well.

What kind of air compressor do you need to run a plasma cutter? (how many psi, gallons, volts... and any other info...?)

Hi:

You will need at least the following:

25 CFH at 120 PSI
30 gallon reserve tank
220 V single or 3 Phase (that depends of your voltage available at your shop/home)

For cutting: set your plasma regulator to 75 psi.
For Gouging: set your plasma regulator to 65 psi.

That's all.

My Thermal Dynamic Drag Gun Plasma Cutter runs but cant blow its arc. Bit of spark, Bit of air, then just refuses to blow its arc. Was working well and with new tips and electrodes but then just refused....

Hi:
There is no mention of the Thermal Dynamic's gun model, but i will suppose that it is a SL60 or a SL100 which are replacement guns for any model of plasma using the proper adaptor.
Your problem could be the start cartridge which go bad now and then when the gun is used as a replacement of a hammer to make the cut piece to fall.

The way to check if your start cartridge is in good condition is by checking the low part of the cartridge, push it up (or down depending on the way you handle it) it should freely slide inside and return out.

Good luck.

Hi,

I would recommend replacing the electrode, and maybe the tip, other that that it sounds like you aren't getting a good enough ground for it to start.

It has become my experience that the trouble is in the torch head, especially after the torch head has gotten hot during use. Replacing it may solve your problem.

Plasma cutter started cutting at an angle even when held perfectly perpendicular. New consumables were put on, same amperage, same air pressure. I'm stumped!

did you put all new consumables in ,sounds like there is still old one there.make sure nozzel is put back together right.I have worked on welders and plasmas for years, the torch head is very tempermental.

Hobart 250 a keeps cutting off the flame

If you have a bad air supply then the moisture in the air will cause the torch to cut off and the cut quality depends also on air supply, speed, metal thickness and condition of your consumables, meaning your electrode and other related parts in the torch tip.Hope this helps

Plasma cutters Question

There are a few things about plasma cutting safety that are different from general welding safety tips This short list of plasma cutter safety tips is geared toward light duty plasma cutting using compressed air not large industrial units that use gas mixtures and water cutting tables. Electric Shock Can Kill - Operating a plasma cutter completes an electric circuit between the torch and the workpiece. The workpiece and anything touching the workpiece are part of the electrical circuit. - Never touch the torch body, workpiece or the water in a water table when the plasma system is operating. Voltages & Currents - Plasma cutter output voltages are much greater than welding voltages, usually 100-200 volts. Precautionary Measures - Do not pick up the workpiece, including the waste cutoff, while you cut. Leave the workpiece in place on the workbench with the work cable attached during the cutting process. - During plasma cutting operations do not move the work clamp. Wear insulated gloves and boots, and keep your body and clothing dry. - Do not stand, sit or lie on or otherwise touch any wet surface when using the plasma cutter system. - Insulate yourself from work and ground using dry insulating mats or covers big enough to prevent any physical contact with the work or ground. If you must work in or near a damp area, use extreme caution. Work Cable - Ensure metal-to-metal contact between work cable and workpiece or work table. - Work cable clamp should make contact with clean metal free of rust, dirt, painted surfaces, etc. - Do not attach work cable to the piece that will fall away when the cut is complete Plasma cutter Arc Rays Plasma cutter arc rays produce intense visible and invisible (ultraviolet and infrared) rays that can burn eyes and skin. Protective Clothing - Guantlet gloves, safety shoes and hat. - Flame-retardant clothing to cover all exposed areas. - Cuffless trousers to prevent entry of sparks and slag. - Remove combustibles, such as a butane lighter or matches, from your pockets before cutting. Noise Levels of Plasma Arc Cutting - Plasma arc cutting systems can generate noise levels in excess of 120 dB during high-amperage cutting operations. - Ear protection should be used when operating or working near plasma arc cutting operations. Toxic Fumes & Gases Plasma arc cutting can produce toxic fumes and gases that deplete oxygen and cause serious injury. - Keep the cutting area well ventilated or use an approved air-supplied respirator. - Do not cut in locations near degreasing, cleaning or spraying operations. The vapors from certain chlorinated solvents decompose to form phosgene gas when exposed to ultraviolet radiation. Pacemakers & Hearing Aids - Pacemaker and hearing aid operation can be affected by magnetic fields from high currents. Pacemaker and hearing aid wearers should consult a doctor before going near any plasma arc cutting and gouging operations Overall Plasma Safety - The plasma arc cutting process can be very safe. - By paying attention to safety standards and correctly setting up and operating the system, plasma arc cutting poses no more a threat than most welding processes.
