Question about Garden

The mower blades will not turn. Tractor runs fine but the blades will not turn when the pto is switched on. There is nothing block or holding the blades. They just will no longer rotate when the pto is ingaged. Why?

You don't say what type mower you have so here is some general things to check. You need to check if the belt if belt driven blades is there and properly adjusted. If that is fine check that the PTO switch is working. For this use a test light or multi meter to see if the ground is good, that it is getting current, and that current is going thru the switch when turned on. If all that is working check to see if the current is getting to the PTO. As you can see there is a number of things that can cause this problem so if you need further help please let us know the details and make and model of your mower for more detailed procedures for repairing the mower.

PTO won't turn on.

The belts may be off pulleys and PTO shutting tractor off is a safety item so if you get off mower with blades engaged you will not get injured Tom. Thank you and good luck. Please leave some feedback for I am fairly new.

MY TRACTOR RUNS FINE& STOPS LIKE IT SHOULD. THE BLADES DO NOT TURN WITH THE PTO SWITCH ENGAGED

if this is a newer mower then the problem is usually a safty switch is not being completed and this is stopping the blades from turning on, most mowers have a switch under the seat that has to be shorted out in order for the pto to work, this can be checked by connecting the two wires going to the switch together, and seeing if this solves the problem. Does it sound like the pto is trying to turn on if this is the case then you might find you have a siezed up bearing that is stopping the pto from engaging but my guess is a safty switch is malfunctioning and causing the pto tp not turn on, Hope This Helps Don

Engine starts, but stalls when clutch is released.

The is a safety switch located underneath the mower, in the dashboard area. This switch will not pass voltage to the ignition system unless the pedal is depressed, or the deck is not all the way up. However, your culprit is most likely the pto (power take off) switch on the dash that engages the blades. It will not allow the mower to start, if pulled, and if faulty will shut off ignition power when you release the pedal. First. You'll need a volunteer to sit on the mower and operate the controls.  Now put the deck down and with the pedal depressed start the engine. Nothing should happen, if it does replace the deck switch Sears part number #176138 mentioned above. Now raise the deck and release the pedal. Again, nothing should happen. Same solution if it does. If nothing happens on both tests the switch is ok. NOW. Behind the dash, find the pto switch, and squeeze the sides, depressing two clips that hold it in the dash. You should now be able to slide it though the dash, wiring attached. Unplug the switch. With pedal depressed, deck up, someone sitting on the seat, start the mower. Now release the pedal (making sure to block the wheels and have the transmission handle is in the neutral position. If the engine continues to run, you found the problem. Replace the PTO switch. Sears part number # 174651. Also, check the plug to the pto, ignition and deck switches for corrosion as this is a common problem, though not likely to cause yours, it could. Good luck, and please let us know the outcome, good or bad. Thanks so much.
