TAn item in our Frigidaire upright kept the door from closing. We were unaware of it until I notoced it and the freezer was defrosting. I delat with the food, closed the door, and it began to freeze again. Approximately 5 days laetr when I opened the door, it had stopped working at some time and was defrosting. It was running, but was never able to begin to freeze a small amount of water placed in a cup in the freezer. Several hours later, while we waited for the water to freeze, the top of the freezer was very hot to the touch. At that point, we unplugged it. After pricing new freezers, we want to repair this one as it is only 4 years old. Before I schedule a visit, can you give me an idea of possible reasons for this to have occurred so I will be knowledgable before the service rep arrives?

Re:" the top of the freezer was very hot to the touch."

Check if the defrost element is staying always on, it looks like a shorted defrost thermostat.
If instead there is ice on evap coils located behind the freezer, ten the problem is still defrost system, but the thermostat is open.

Check if the compressor is starting, if compressor does not start at all, then that is the problem, if compressor stays on all the time, and does not cool, then you have a gas leak from some point on the coils.

Before calling for repair try doing a complete defrost of the unit by leaving it to defrost overnight.

If the fridge restarts cooling, the problem was the defrost system. If problem comes back after few days or weeks , then the defrost thermostat will still need to be replaced.

Why is there Water on floor under my freezer

Hello C. Richard Robinson - Is the door being kept open too long or frequently? If so, try removing the items needed from freezer ahead of time so the door is not open as much. However, main possibly could be a poor door seal. Try checking this by placing a dollar between the body of the freezer and the door. Now close the door. The dollar bill should stay in place and pull out with a small amount of resistance. If the dollar bill falls out when placed between the gasket and cabinet double check to see if the door is being blocked by anything stopping it from closing. If nothing is stopping the door then the gasket will need replacing and adjusting by a professional.

I have a frigidaire freezer upright model#ffu20f9gw3

Without any additional info, there are a lot of possibilities:
1. Condenser coil (underneath unit) is dirty and clogged.
2. Compressor is failing. (need A/C tech)
3. Metering device is clogged. (need A/C tech)
4. Refrigerant charge is low. (need A/C tech)
5. Door seal is broken (frost will form around door).
6. Defrost heaters are stuck on (replace defrost timer located underneath unit at front).
7. Condenser fan has failed (underneath freezer on back).
8. Evaporator fan (inside fan) has failed (ice will form on cooling coil).

This should get you started...

Freezer is running but the items are thawing and not freezing

it could possible be the defroster unit going out on the thermostat theres a hole on the bottom where you can access a screw that will allow you to check and see if the defroster is working put a srew driver in the hole and turn it clock wise till you here it click and then listen for the unit to start defrosting cycle you'll hear a hissing like sound if its working if not you'll need a new defrosting unit
