Question about Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

I have an A O Smith 2HP B748 motor. The motor capacitor leaked out all of its oil in the 107 degree heat. It is 30mfd 370 volt but only 3 1/2" tall with the leads. All I can find 4 3/4 which wont fit the motor housing.

If you have a local repair shop that rebuilds electric motors they will have the right capacitor. If you need to you can put the cover back on the motor that the capacitor was in run the two wires under the lip of the cover and plug them into the capacitor thats to big. Use zip tie or even better a small strip of plumbers strap. (this can be found at any hardware/plumbing store) You can use the zip ties around the motor or attach the plumbing strap by putting it around the capacitor and using the screw that holds the old capacitor housing to hold the strap to the motor. You can get an exact replacement capacitor online or from Marcone appliance parts in St. Louis Missouri.
But the best place is a local shop as I already mentioned that rebuilds electric motors. good luck

Run cap capacitance can be 5 - 25 uf and voltage of up to 370 volts. Physically oval, round, tall, short. Depends on what motor it is for.

Unit does not heat or cool. Starts to operate if I spin the fan. Failure appears to be caused by the starting capacitor. However, there are two capacitors one with two leads and one with several. The...

Look at the top of the capacitor that has several leads to see if it is a dual cap. It will have 3 sets of connectors in a row and if you look close, they will be numbered with these markings, C for common, Fan, for the outdoor fan motor, and Herm, for the compressor. This would be the one. Look it over to see if the top on either one is raised up, swollen looking, leaking oil or deformed in any way. If so, the cap is faulty. It may just be your motor going out. This motor gets a lot of run time in the summer, and if its a heat pump, the winter also. If it tries to take off when you spin it, sounds like the windings are weak. But, it would be much cheaper if it was the capacitor. If you are going to have it tested for the proper microfareds/uf's, make your self a drawing of all of the wires and where they go, so you don't forget. This happens a lot. The capacitor will have markings like this on the side. 55ufx370 volts or 440 volts and the fan will be 5uf's x 370 volts or the numbers may be higher or lower depending on the tonnage of your unit, just to give you an idea. Please keep me posted and get back to me and let me know what you are able to find out. I will be here if you need my help. Don't forget to rate me as I know you will be kind. Keep me posted for sure. Thank you,

My hayward 2hp ao smith turns on then kicks gfi breaker after a couple seconds. after several tries it works ok.

I think you have a failed start capacitor. Have your motor looked at by your professional pool supply.

Pump hums and tries to start but shuts down and repeats. I took it out with the power off of course. Any ideas to check further or do I need to just replace it?

Take it to a local emectric motor shop to have the start capacitor checked. It may be a simple fix and quite inexpensive. Of course, if the seal looks like it has been leaking and the bearings are damaged or frozen, you will need to replace the motor. Replacing just the motor and any damaged pump parts is generally cheaper than a whole new pump and will last just as long since all the moving parts are with the motor when you removed it.

Hayward AO Smith Pump Motor is getting electricity but won't star

Make sure the motor spins by hand, then make sure the contacts on the v shaped start switch as closed when motor is off and make sure the capacitor is good a bad one usually leaks black stuff all over. To avoid buying a capacitor you might not need have it tested
