Yes if you have the freezing issue it is the GPU and the CPU overheating you will need a good guide to fix this and you can use one HERE or you can send it in to be fixed.

Hold power on the front of the console, and keep holding until the system powers off again. (Ignore all the beeps and keep holding. It'll sound like someone pulled the power cable out).
Once you've done that, release power, then hold it again till it does a BEEBEEP. It should then (HOPEFULLY) force itself into safe mode and ignore the firmware update.
This is either a problem with misalignment and either the laser or the drive itself is at fault.
It might be worth disassembling the unit again - clean the laser with a Q-tip and isopropyl alcohol then reinstall the drive being sure that you have carefully followed the correct procedure.
try to play it on its side not vertical you may be blocking air intakes and system will turn itself off to avoid frying itself it has internal thermometer try to leave your ps3 in an open area also try putting a fan by it to keep air around it cool
Most likely, your system is overheating. Make sure you have several inches of space all the way around your system (except of course underneath it) and that it's not in an enclosed space. The system will shut itself off to keep from breaking. Good luck!
Madden 09 itself has a lot of issues. EA is supposed to come up with a patch to fix the freezing issue for Madden 09.
There are a lot of unhappy madden 09 owners outh there.
As far as freezing on any game that sounds like a bluray diode issue or overheating issues.
keep the console in a well vented are (maybe even add a small portable fan from walmart that can help cool down your system.
