How can I fix or replace a broken wingnut on my Stanley No220 Block Plane?

Hi Steve. A cursory check on ebay shows you can buy one for as little as 7.00. I suggest buying one used or one being sold for parts. I had this same part broken on mine. They are cast metal and tend to break. From one wood worker to another, I'd highly recommend bumping up your game to a plane with an adjustable throat like the Stanley 9 1/2 adjustable throat plane. You'll thank me for the rest of your life! :)

How do i assemble a stanley block plainer

1, Lay pencil on the table top, place body of plane with the front (toe) resting on the pencil, so the light passes beneath the front and middle of the plnes body.
2, lay blade, bevel side up, in to body of plane, ideally sharp end is sticking out of the mouth ever so slightly., 1/2-1mm.

3, Release the knob or lever cam on the lever cap and place on top of blade.

4, tighten knob/turn leaver till it tightens on the blade. and your ready.

5, If the blade isn't protruding the mouth correctly then:

6, Loosen a knob/lever a little to allow the blade to just move, adjust the blade forwards/sidways, lock it in place by re tighten the knob/lever.

Plane a thin piece of wood, re adjust as necessary till wafer thin shavings collect in the mouth ontop of the bevel.

Adjusting stanley block plane G12-060

Adjust the mouth opening by loosening the front knob, then turning the little lever under it to move the sliding "tongue". Adjust the iron extension by turning the rear knob - it should BARELY peek out under the sole. Adjust the iron\'s angle by sliding the rear lever from side to side. Adjust the iron\'s tension with the top cap screw.

As you plane, if your plane takes off anything thicker than a single layer of toilet paper, the iron is extended too far. A block plane is not a tool to take off big hunks of wood, it\'s a tool to very slightly shave a wood surface, one thousandth of an inch at a time. As such, it needs to be crazily sharp, sharpened to your best approach to perfection. Please read about "Scary Sharp" on the Internet.

I need a owners manual for a stanley 12-920 plane

I can't locate the instructions for your plane, but the instructions for the current models should answer most of your questions. See this link.
If that doesn't work for you, do a google search on "tuning a hand plane" and you'll find a wealth of information that should help you sort it out. There are also excellent books and articles available on the subject, with many views on how to properly set up your plane. I suggest you start with Taunton Press or Fine Woodworking magazine, and go from there. Your local library may have access to older article which will help you to set up and properly use this excellent tool.

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.
If I've managed to answer your question or solve a problem, please take just a moment to rate this post....thanks!

How rare is a 120 block plane made by stanley USA NO STARS ON IT

these planes were made by stanley from 1876 till 1947, it is about 7 1/2" long and cutter is 1 5/8" wide, it is virtualy exactly same as stanley 110, but it has blade raiser installed.

most popular are models without star and these are valued at anything between $20 to $80, depending on the condition, if with original box, labels, they are about double the price.

6 star model, second most popular, is not exactly rare but value can be between about $50 to $250

5 star model, it is rare, if complete, its value is between $300 up to $800, it differs in that that it have raised front end knob receiver

original price was $1. and for another $1 you will receive dozen blades...

i hope this help you?
