Dell Latitude D600 laptop Hard Drive replacement

I would like to replace my old 30 GB PATA HDD with a new faster and larger SATA drive. Is this possible, and how? Does the mobo have a SATA plug-in like my desktop mobo?

If your computer is running kind of sluggish, you can fix it with an easy clean up of your registry. Here's a link to a free scan that works well:

I've used this one and it sped up my computer by quite a bit. Hopefully this helps.

The motherboard does not support SATA. If you want to use SATA, you'll have to use an adapter. Not sure if this is possible in your laptop. Also I don't think this increases performance very much.
So it's not gonna be a faster drive, but larger can...

I have a latitude D600 and I am now getting the 'disk read error' after installing a new larger than 137 GB hard drive. I know (now) I need to upgrade the BIOS to see the larger hard drive, bu

Unless Dell has the upgrade for the bios to include the larger hardware you are going to be in trouble, I would go online to Dell and check for upgrades to your model if they still support it. The other option is contact customer and technical support to see it they can give you a alternative solution.

I'd suggest you invested in a portable hard drive for your data at a tenth the price you could get a 100GB drive

How to find the part number of HDD 20 GB of Latitude D600?

Dell is very good at supplying part numbers on their home page. One of the ways to find it is do a yahoo search for dell latitude d600 parts.. This should bring you lots of info on d600. From there you can find a Dell parts supplier. here is a link from the search I did: http://www.parts-people.com/index.php?action=category&id=140&subid=117&refine=hard drive

Please note. You wont find a Dell hard drive. They use Western Digital and other brands. Most any hard drive brand will work.

the HDD best to use is an SSD.
the HDD was a standard, 2.5? PATA drive for laptops

why would you want such a small drive, they dont make them now. (40 smallest?) new.

this PC is not supported by HP now, its too old a Pentium III no less.
why would 20gb be and upgrade.?? 10 now? omg , it is 10GB...then... and worse its PATA (IDE) harddrive.

its 17 years old now, most are in the recycle bin,

what if there are more problems, (endless when that old)

you can not use modern, SATA drive (
just 2.5" PATA (IDE) (pata is wide parallel interface with wide ribbon cable)

I just installed a used hard drive bought on ebay for a dell latitude d600 the computer finds 0 dard drive

OK, the big question is #1 do you have the interposer board from the old drive attached to the new one? The interposer is an adapter that covers the pins on the HDD and converts them to a sliding spade type contact to better allow insertion/removal of the HDD.

On a warranty replacement drive, the interposer normally comes on the new drive. On one from EBAY, not sure. If the HDD has 2 rows of exposed pins then it doesn't have an interposer attached. If it has a small adapter protruding say 1/4 inch and it has a row of contacts top and bottom, the interposer is on the drive.

If the interposer is on the drive, the drive may be bad. If it is not, remove the one from the old drive and attach it to this one.

HDD is cactus, what are replacement alternatives for the OEM?

You can use any 2.5 inch ATA/IDE drive as a replacement. Notebook hdd's are a smaller size than regular desktop hdd's. You can find a good idea online at stores like tigerdirect.com or newegg.com. Hope this helps & please rate this answer fixya. Thanks.
